Default Going overboard on my lathe saddle

    Hi,
I bought a taper attachment and after checking my saddle on my 10 year old Chinese lathe I found the back was not true to the carriage movement, so I decided to clean it up.

After truing the back up I got carried away and cleaned up the whole thing including the cross slide.

I found the underneath of the cross slide was not true to the top which would make the nut sit at an angle.
I am making a new nut for the taper attchment so no harm in making it a little higher to match the newly ground surface, though I had already shimed it from new as the nut was to high.

I did the grinding on my mill (horizontal) to get it good enough and then took to it with wet and dry using kerosene as a lube because water would instantly rust it. Around the outside I used an end mill to clean it up and then wet and dry.

After it was all done I acrylic clear coated it and painted the red (rust kill) underneath. This way it will never need polishing again and has worked great on things in the past.

While I was there I bored 2 holes in the apron to add oil seals 22x 16 x 4mm to raise the oil level in it. I have found with the low oil level oil doesn't get to the top cross slide gear, now it will.

I also bored each socket head hole on the carriage to take covers and counter sunk the oil fill hole to take a allen head screw for the oil fill so it's flush and doesn't stick up.

The pictures speak for themselves, I was totally over it by the time I finished, but am happy with the results. I showed my son inlaw and said I got carried away, he said look at your 4wd (which I totally polished all the aluminium, LOL)

Thats it's 10th birthday present over and done with, Now just to fit the taper attchment where it all started.

    Default finish

    Hi

You are a whiz at the polishing ......... that blinding mirror like finish reminds me of the chrome bumbers and trim on yank tank cars of the 1950's . The green casting you started with appears to be a fairly decent finish for a Asian built machine , most of the Asian machines seem to have gobs of bog over the castings

How did you do the grinding on your mill ? Mike

    Hi Mike
I used the horizontal arbour with the support to mount the surface grinding wheel which was around 10 inches diameter from memory.
Because the slower speed of the horizontal the larger wheel msde up for it, though the power feed was working on rapid.

The casting did have a decent bit of bog but it was pretty good underneath.

Beautyful job Dave. You mention you cleaned up the cross slide. I hope you do not mean the angle between the saddle movement along the bedways and the cross slide dovetails. This angle is not supposed to be exactly 90 degrees like on a mill table. It is supposed to be a fraction off from 90 degrees to ensure the lathe faces concave even after some wear in the cross slide. Chris

    Hi chris
I suppose that part of the post is a bit missleading for others so glad you brought it up.

I know about the critical angles there for a lathe and only cleaned up the outside and under the center if of the crossslide.

My lathe faces slightly concave already from factory and I wont be touching the dovetails for a little while yet.

I bought some scrapers from Phil a while back and also posted about my surface plates here, but until I get a bit of experiance under my belt I wont be touching the dovetails.

    Dave.

Can you please cut that out. You're going to give those of us that are supposed to do this for a living a bad name. </joke>

    Regards Phil.

You are out of control Dave!
I see you still have some of that paint left from when you cleaned up and painted your mill, which was also a work of art!

    Good work. Thanks for sharing.

Girl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.
