Thread: Making your own stickers

Avery do a range of heavy duty silver laser/inject printable labels which look pretty good. I've had good success printing onto these, then overlaying with Fablon type sticky back plastic, then cutting out the shape with a craft knife. Ok the edges arent sealed and if heavily soiled, you may get oil seeping between the fablon and the label at the edges, but can give you quite a professional result if you take care with the application of the fablon and cutting.

I made new V Belt/spindle speed charts for my mill and they still look great a couple of years on, and get regularly splattered/wiped down.

Fablon, are you talking about the stuff you spray on clothes prior to ironing?

I definitely do not iron my clothes, so may be I'm thinking of something else.

Hi Ken,
Have a look at using Trefolyte, there would be local companies that make labels that you could get a quote from, used a lot on Electrical Cabinets.
They have a self-adhesive back on them and you can get it different colours.

Cor blimy, I remember "Fablon" the clear sticky backed plastic film that we had to put on the covers of our school books to protect them from getting dirty ! Wow that is a blast from the past.

Enlightenment! Over on this side of the world that stuff is referred to as 'contact'. The biggest challenge was trying to keep the stuff straight and flat so that you did not put wrinkles on your books.

Ken, I have a pantograph engraver here. Provided the Al panel is not too big (120x60 should fit). I could engrave text/ numbers for you (and maybe a line or two). Graphics are possible but a pain, so fast/ slow is way preferable to turtle/ rabbit. I also have a black paint crayons, so provided black was good, could infill for you. Sticking on would just be double sided tape or kwikgrip (rubber contact adhesive for the Northern hemisphere crowd).

We just called that stuff clear contact.... I somehow know you do not put that generic contact stuff through a laser printer.. I will not elaborate how I know, just trust me..

I have successfully made these panel front stickers by designing in Word or similar, printing on laser or inkjet then laminating them, trimming to size and putting thin double sided adhesive on the back.

I can print on just about anything including aluminium wood plastic steel material can also make stickers send me a pm

Now that is a useful idea ! I have a brand new, still in the box laminator that I was given quite some time ago. I've never found a use for it, till now.

Here's an example of a couple of stickers I made by printing on Silver labels and then sticking matt finish fablon sticky back plastic over the top.

Total cost £5 for the labels, £2 for the roll of matt finish fablon, both from ebay. I now have enough to make enough labels to last me the rest of my life.

Great looking labels, but a quick look on ebay shows they are way more than 5 quid a packet. Can you let us know the seller's name please?

Yeahh sorry, I bought a split pack of 10 A4 sheets for a fiver some time back. Can't see any split packs at the moment, but the ones I bought were Avery L6013 A4 labels. Best I could find is 20 sheet packs for £14 plus postage. I don't know whether these are available in AUS.

Those Avery labels look good. I think they are the type used by various appliance lead testing companies. BTW, I found these at Office Works:

Edit: the silver labels all seem to be around the $90 mark retail in Aus. However I found the labels for $56 here (plus $7 delivery) Seems to be the best price.
