My last sentence was not aimed at you, or your post Marc. It was a general comment, looking at the whole thread.
And if you think this is an isolated case you have something else coming. All forums have this occurrences regularly. This forum is probably the one that from all the forums I know has the least.
However it is healthy to look at ourselves when something like this happens.
The person that posts a helpful comment does so because the set of values that govern his character tells him that this is the way to be, that is who he is.
The person that posts a stiff lipped comment does so because the set of values that govern his character tells him that this is the way to be, that is who he is.
Both do so for themselves, to conform to who they are, to what both think is of value, each believing that such is the best light they will be seen in by others.
In general is best not to tell a person this, since he will deny it vigorously.
The mechanism by which we operate is not very popular and certainly not politically correct.
Still it is very helpful if someone can look into it and understand what makes him or her tick.
One of the reasons I like this Forum is that the members generally have better than average logic capability. That is a given, simply because of the Forum name and the hobby we all share.
I like your way of thinking Marc.

Well, it is not my way of thinking, it is something I have learned.
The reasons that makes us act and do what we do, are well known yet very unpopular since when you look into them there is no blaming anyone but ourselves. Will not win a popularity contest, will not win an election and definitely not be part of any political party or religion's credo.
In a nutshell our behaviour is governed by a set of values that we acquired mainly before age 10 and without any participation of our conscious mind. In other words we did not choose the set of values that govern our behaviour and most people go through life without even knowing what this values are and how they landed in their subconscious. There are those who are wired for success and those who are wired for failure, those for friendliness and those for antagonism, and when it is entirely possible for someone to change the values that are not serving him, recognising the mechanism that drives him or her is so counterintuitive that it is rejected most of the time with intellectual reasoning and popular wisdom.
"Knowing" what is supposed to be done and what is not, rules and regulations, moral codes, civility, all mean nothing in the face of our hidden core values. And so we struggle a lifelong not to fall by the side of the beaten path.
It is a fascinating subject but best learned alone or with a mentor and not shared too often in public since it draws ferocious opposition.“We often contradict an opinion for no other reason
than that we do not like the tone in which it is expressed.”

Many people have noticed the forum has changed in recent years. I offered an opinion of why that may be. It was my opinion, expressed clearly as such, of which I'm just as entitled to voice as any other member of this forum should they choose. I typically don't offer an opinion because I think it will please others, I say it because I believe it's true/valid, as very nicely explained by Marc.
Meanwhile, I'd suggest those here who have such a high opinion of their own moral values that they're second only to God himself in moral virtue, at least in their own mind, may like to sit down and have a good long and hard think about why it is their name always seems to feature when there's a conflict around

As toolman59 has not logged on since the day he started this thread I would say the answer is no.
So perhaps all the soap boxes can now be stored away for the next occasion which perhaps will be a happier one.
There is perhaps some cause for reflection on why this happened and whether it should have.
