Well no where near as impressive as what Harty has been up to but here is how I wasted this weekend...

An over the top ball turner. Very crude in the execution but it seems to work. It will be required for an upcoming project...
Ever noticed how we have to buy/make another tool so that you can finish that other project that you started so that you could finish another project?

Yep. Today I worked on a tailstock die holder so I can make a special screw that will hold some brass sectors together so that my rotary table can be used for dividing so that I can try making a cycloid gear box (sans CNC).
One day I might catch up with myself

Jayson, did you see the other ball turners in Bob's ball turner thread? (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ba...ht=ball+turner)

    Thanks Michael,

I had forgotten that thread. After seeing it again and being reminded of Bob's work, I'm going to have to lift my game and at least clean up before taking any more photos

    Very nice Jayson.
The latest issue of MEW has plans for a rear mounted ball turner. I might make one one of these days, or one like yours so i don't have to remove the toolpost to put the ball turner on.

I finally got around to making a locking lever for my BXA toolpost. Bar is 50mm dia, handle is 16 and the knob is one i made from casting resin and black oxide some time back. Although i have an M16 tap i had to rough out the internal thread on the lathe as my biggest tap handle is not long enough to drive such a big tap, i think its rated to 1/2".

Sure looks the part Ew. A vast improvement over a hex nut and the associated searching for the spanner in a sea of swarf.

Did you bore and tap while it was full length and steady supported or after parting off ? And, how did you hold and centre it, the tapered boss, when you drilled. tapped and counter bored for the handle? No harm in posting more of those crystal clear photos so others can follow the process.

And finally, what is the purpose of the vertical stub arising from the compound slide near the graduated dial? A coitus interruptus mechanism for threading maybe? George Thomas featured a CI mechanism for a Myford compound in his wonderful Model Engineers Workshop Manual that looks somewhat similar.

Cut off first and then tapped Bob. I started a part to get it the right length and then finished it on the BS, how did i live without it?
There is a 5mm parallel section and it happens that the nut is 25mm thick and my 5" 3 jaw's jaws are 24mm high. Once chucked i cleaned up the face back to my part and then bored.
If anyone was going to notice the pics it was going to be you. I feel a bit dirty and somehow like i have betrayed my F55 but i bought a coolpix S4200, got out the tripod and have been snapping away.....
No more pics but some video (has to test its 720p ability!) if anyone is interested i guess i could edit it into something watchable.
    Cheers,

    Ew,

I'm still wondering about the compound and I know how you feel about moving on from your old camera. My Coolpix is a trashy flashy little thing compared to my F2s but it runs rings around them. And it fits in my pocket.

I'm up for a bit of video watching.

You are correct Bob, it is a coitus interruptus, but is next to useless. I think there maybe a vid of it in action is the dc motor conversion thread, Bruce was asking about it there. It is next to useless as it locks forward over center and to retract it the tool first moves in before moving back. I put a locking grubscrew in the slide for now, and left the handle off.
It really needs a cam made for it so it locks on a section that is a radius of the central axis of the handle. In my head it needs to be a sort of round triangle, but I haven't drawn it yet. At the moment its an off center spigot acting on a brass block sliding perpendicular to the screws axis.
Next time its apart I'll take some pics.

    Cheers,
    Ew

    Ps video on the way.

Hmm, or a spiral and pin, much like a half nut mechanism. Now I want to get it working....

    Default Locking Lever

    Ewan
Nice work on the machining of the Locking nut.
My question is... How did you hold the workpiece to drill tap & counterbore the angled hole for the handle?
Also what did you use for a counterbore tool ?
    regards
    Bruce
