H&f Qctp
Does anyone have any experience with the Hare & Forbes Quick Change Tool Post (QA-140)?
Want to put one on my Hercus, just wondering if it's ok for size?

I have one. They are essentially the Aloris BXA size. Comes with the 250 size holders which are for 5/8" (ie 16mmm) sized tools.
Mine is on a 12x36 and there is a lot more upwards adjustment than downwards in it. I would suggest it is probably a tad large for a Hercus aren't they a 10 or 9" swing like a Southbend? I would say an AXA size would be better - have seen them on fleabay however more expensive than the H&F.Cheers

Hi Craig,
Yes, the Hercus is 9".
Had a look at the website, but couldn't find the AXA size toolpost. The toolholders though are kin expensive!
Actually, just looking again at the H&F catalogue, there IS a centre height marking, cleverly disguised as CH. Must be getting old and dottery or something!
Perhaps the smaller QA-100 would be a better option, though I would have preferred the cam lock on the big brother.
Had a look at that auction site you mentioned, also a bit exxy.A man who thinks that it can't be done shouldn't interrupt a man who's doing it........

Yep the extra tool holders are @ $50 each unless you are in the @#$&*#$ USA where they cost $17.....damn market forces.
New leadership old leadership stuff it - I'll vote for the nob who gets us cheaper tools(toys).
I am waiting for my 1 1/4" 60 degree dovetail cutter to arrive and then I can get to work on my lump of 50x40 CRS and make some more tool holders.
Once I have the cutter it shouldn't actually cost me much more than $10 per holder to make - plus time but that is free IMHO. $50 for 500mm of 1020 CRS and a few hex screws etc.
I ended up sourcing the cutter (its a UK made quality cutter) from the UK (fleabay) for under half of what it costs for an asian cutter here.Cheers

You wouldn't be interested in making a second set by any chance?

Have to make the first set first They may take somewhat more effort than I envisage, however the online instructions and the concept isn't that complex. It seems setting the dovetail width is the biggest issue.
Unfortunately I am a bit time poor at the moment so would have to decline at present. Never know after Xmas things might be better but I am spending quite a bit of time preparing my 4x4 for a big trip mid next year - it is No1 priority.Cheers

No worries Craig, I subscribe to the 'no harm in asking' theory!
Best of luck with the big trip - where are you off to?A man who thinks that it can't be done shouldn't interrupt a man who's doing it........

Simpson again but going across normally and then back across the top of the Simpson via Madigans and down the Hay River to Poepells Corner.
Should be fun. We are both looking forward to some nice desert camps again.
If making them turns out easy enough I will let you know. You can come over and make chips on the mill. It's hardly going to kill it, worst case will be a sharpen of the dovetail cutter - I gather you are a Brisso.Cheers

Well, all the best. I havn't used my 4WD at all since coming down from Darwin. Just too expensive down here, not enough time etc. Which is a shame. Hope you enjoy the trip!
Yep, i'm South side, at Kingston.

Almost finished my first tool holder. Need to get the locking screws and drill and tap the holes to suit and then I have one tool ready to go.
Not overly hard but cutting the dovetail to the correct dimension is certainly something you take slowly and test regularly - oversize is a bad place to be.
I intend to use the remaining piece of CRS as one large item to mill and that way I just cut the dovetail in one continuous length and then part off the holders. Far easier than squaring up individual blocks.
One tip I picked up off the net is that you only finish the min number of tool holders and then if you have a special need tool holder you can machine to suit.Cheers

Well done Craig!
have to post some photos of your handy work.
I almost bought a mill last week, but a mate talked me into buying a boat instead. Boat accessories are dearer than mill accessories.......A man who thinks that it can't be done shouldn't interrupt a man who's doing it........
