I cannot understand where you source all these crap file examples from. I have never held anything that badly made in my hands. I would or could not use that thing above on anything, not even on old horse shoes. Hell, even cheap chainsaw files are FAR better made!!!
Looks like nowdays one must buy (and pay) for "precision" class files to get a decent file. Some 10 years ago normal "engineer's" class files were almost as well made as precision files, just dimensionally not as accurate (precision files have 0.1 or 0.2mm size tolerance).

Chris, that is the entire point! With small saw files THIS is all you can look forward too. Utter CRAP!
You begin to understand what is motivating me to get some change happening.
That file is from Pferd (via the Australian agent via Nepean Bolt in Penrith). I had to buy a box of 10, and 8 of them are like that! OTOH, the smaller 5" Double extra slim looks like this:
What's more, it has a gentle taper that starts just below the shoulder (like it should).
You'll note I said "German owned production". On the box it reads:
"Limas para sierras doble extra delgadas" which is Cherman for...what, precisely?Last edited by FenceFurniture; 25th June 2013 at 01:31 AM. Reason: Adding "small" to "With small saw files" for clarity

First: I will get to your question after some preamble.
Second: I have always found it best to acquaint myself with the facts before shooting (particularly if there's an unpleasant point to be made). Otherwise the possibility of looking foolish arises. Had you read the Saw Sharpening Files 101, you would have read that I have pointed out problems that we had with one type of Liogier file (the 100mm EST) in the second delivery. That's because I'm impartial, and just want a result.
That's why I said, within this thread:
Well, Liogier isn't that current supplier, because as far as I know the problems may still exist with the 100mm EST files, and nor do they even make a DEST range of files - which are required.
Fourth: I said this
because at face value Liogier is nearly there, and that was the only time I mentioned Liogier in this thread as a manufacturer. The only other reference I made was of a story from the man himself, re cutting files in half.
Fifth: Do I have a commercial interest? Well I would say no, as there is absolutely no profit being made. Yes, there is a very small margin on the Liogier Rasps and Files Group Buys. This is to cover expenses involved in them. One of those expenses is the costs involved in research:
just the same as I purchased the files (32 of them) that were sent around the testing circuit last year. This was the circuit that they passed through your hands on. You might recall your comments to me at the time. It also involved around 10-12 prepaid Exp.Post bags at an approximate cost of $160-180. I was very prepared for (actually expecting) the files to be quite worn out at the end of a very exhausting test circuit, and therefore of no further use, and I would have been out of pocket by around $400 as a very rough estimate. The fact that they are still very useable, and therefore in my file drawer is simply a testament to the quality of the files - nothing else. That is also a good reason to try and solve the current Saw Files dilemma with Liogier - there is a tool development relationship already established, and the vast part of their range is excellent value for money (the words of the testers, btw). Indeed, if they are willing, then they are by far the most logical choice.
So, as far as this is concerned:
you can't say that any more because you do know of someone now!
Sixth: Yesterday I came across a Japanese supplier of Taper files, who have the whole range. If I was so hellbent on Liogier, and making a buck out of it, then why would I have posted this under an image of the chart of the taper file range that Tsubosan produces:
I do hope that answers your question sufficiently enough for you.
