I am no expert but one thing I can tell you that will save you lots of problems, is to only buy holders that take ISO inserts. Avoid the cheap sets which use proprietry tips like the plague. They will cost you more in the long run.

I bought a set like this 10 years ago and still use it most every day the lathe is going.

NEW 5 PC 5 8" Shank Carbide Indexable Lathe Tool Holder | eBay

Plenty of tips come up on Ebay (some really good quality) and I recon it's hard to beat these indexables on a smallish lathe like my 10" swing.

You still need finishing cutters, but for hard going these work well and can give a good finish.

I have no regrets on buying them. Got mine from Redwood machinery.

If you do decide to buy this style tool holder - TNMG/TCMT tips (from wherever it's cheapest) don't buy any of those cheap Indian inserts to put in them - they're rubbish.

I've put lots of brands through mine and the ones in the attached photo are unbeatable.

Interrupted cuts, heavy going, no problem. They can still chip like any carbide stuff, but these will take one hell of a beating.

Best by a country mile. Got em off Ebay for peanuts.

    Hi,
A lot of guys use either ccmt or tcmt, I haven't except for a small ccmt boring bar.
I think either would do fine, but you had better remind me of what lathe you have before I start confusing you more by making any other suggestions like wmng...

    Cheers,
