The bottom line is chaps you need to be very aware of what you are welding on .

If it has been sprayed with anything containing trichlorethylene close to the time when you begin welding on it,the arc will react with Trichlorethylene and make you one sick puppy.

Trichorethylene been known about for years.
Some of the nasties also included at one time or another.

    • Some degreaser fluids.
    • Some dye check sprays
    • Dry cleaning fluid- I think it had tetra carbon something in it.

Read the label really carefully before you spray anything on to, a to be welded surface, men!

Dry cleaning fluid contains (contained?) carbontetrachloride as did CTC fire extinguishers.

    "Chloride", is the something

CTC was in common use as a dry leeaning fluid "Dabit Off"and as a general cleaning agent for the electronics inustry until the mid nineteen hundreds.

The RAF put a red dye into the CTC extinguishers to stop them being used for cleaning uniforms, so we were told.

Something in the back of my mind clicked . I recall that the chlorinated hydrocarbon I knew as cabon tetra chloride is activated by the action of the ultraviolet rays from the welding arc primarily, but also from hot metal surfaces, flame and smoking.

I did a google and have found a lot of revelent stuff on welding and fumes.

Its a good read for those of us that do more than a bit of welding.

I must be overly cautious. I have been using stick welders and oxy/ acetylene or oxy/gas for more than 40 years and have worn a suitable mask on all but a few occasions - mostly in a positive exhaust work room with good extraction.

Aside from surprises such as from various compounds as this article describes there are also fumes from the fluxes and coated rods, from paints and coatings on steel and zinc based fumes from gal. None of them seemed to me to be good thing to breathe in and since I wear eye protection too they do not irritate my eyes as much although as the eye protection is vented they are not as protected.

Just as dusts - if you wouldn't eat it why would you let it get in your body? I know it is a nuisance and hot and they get in the way but . . .

Isn't argon only inert to explosion, oxygen and heat...? Probly makes me look dumb now.!!!!! LOL.....
AGRON any way you look at it is still a gas..!!!!
So my brain tells me there must be something that this inert gas will or must react with.

argon has a full outer valence shell, therefore no electrons can be transfered from other elements or atoms, so why can it react, im stumped

Can you you supply this reference please? I am confused too, as I know it to be an inert gas.
