    Hello Phil,
Would you be able to include me in your next scraping class in late Jan thanks? I have some unfinished work & I need to improve on my technique. Also found an old print that I had made from the Dixi site showing scraping down to 2 um flatness on all seats & work surfaces using the mythical (re Marco) pull scraper, quite a slim lightweight version - added it to my coursebook for posterity.
    regards, Dave

Well we had a refresher course held here for a few hours today... Guzzi John came over to collect a surface plate and got a bit of a scraping refresher...

Only had to hit him over the knuckles a couple of times for not keeping straight scraping lines..

    Lots of fun was had...

Just like being back at primary school.. Seriously, it was my first time scraping since the course last year but there's no excuses now as Richards smaller plate has a new home.

    New thread to follow.

No bidding for this old plane. This one came from my late Fathers tool collection.

He was a carpenter and later on a became a tafe teacher.

This one is a Stanley no 110. The largest I have from him is a Record no 6.

Richard, I did some scraping homework but I'm struggling to fix the worn corners and sides.

I'm happy where I got it to. I'll leave the last of the wear as a reminder of the work my Dad did with it.

Does the 'dimply' base after scraping make it easier to push?

I really don't know. My woodworking skills are pretty much non-existent"

I did it for a couple of reasons. Firstly as a scraping exercise but mainly because it allowed me to combine my passion for metalwork with my Dad's lifetime of working with timber.

That looks really really good John, you can see the diagonal lines cross hatch pattern emerging there as you have kept the scraping lines straight... See those sore knuckles were worth it...

    G'day John.

That's not uncommon to leave that last 5%. We call it a witness mark. It shows what you had to do to get back to that plane, whilst maintaining an original reference.

Your scraping is looking good to me. Congratulations.

    Regards Phil.

Thanks for the kind words Phil.

As we all know, getting the first surface flat is the easy bit.

The plan now is to put together the required measuring equipment and try something a bit more adventurous.

Im starting to get to that adventurous stage too. Ive started work on a home made angled straight edge so that I can start straightening up my lathe. Its not fast work mind you, just a few passes here and there...oh look, another job, Id better do that one first. And the missus wants the car washed. And the lawn needs doing...

It might a bit based on laws of friction, but scraping the surface flat is to ensure that the front of sole, blade mouth and back of sole and sides of sole is in contact with the timber and these points ensures a flat surface and also thus reduces blade chatter producing a better finish
it can actually be hollow elsewhere

Flat sole sharp blade and you can peel off .001"

    Thats my understanding anyway
