Scrapyard goodie !

Hi Guys,

Whilst doing my usual nosing around the local scrap yard, a guy came in with a flatback/(ute) with a load of scrap metal in it. After pulling off the weighbridge, he stopped next to me to offload. Well whilst I was watching him tossing stuff off, I spotted this "Paramo" 3 inch vice as it thumped onto the ground. It looked in quite good condition. It is almost identical to the 4 inch "Record" engineers vice that I have had for ever. Well for the princely sum of five UK pounds (about $8) its now mine. It looks like it has got some white paint on it at some time in its life, but there is no rust and it is well greased, so its been looked after reasonably well. I've not cleaned it up ! The photographs show it just as I acquired it.

Never heard or seen a Paramo vice here plenty Records you learn some thing every day here.

Paramo vice's were exactly that, a copy of the record vices. I'm not sure if it was a different company or "Record" themselves under the "Paramo" name. The castings of all the ones I've come across are very very similar, just the embossing on the casting that is different. Even the blue paint is exactly the same colour.

probabaly cos its a english vise....Baron J is in the UK i gather

Made by another company during world war 2 after the Record factory was bombed and out of action, I read somewhere.

Hi Guys,

Finally got around to stripping, cleaning and repainting the old "Paramo" vice that I picked up a while ago.
Under the muck I found its serial number (430) so although its quite old it hasn't done any work. I pulled off the jaws and inspected them for chips or dings. There aren't any. Anyway I've started to paint it blue, not quite the original colour, its a bit darker, but it will look OK when its put back together.

I used masking tape to protect the top and bearing surfaces although I was surprised to find paint on the pads at the front still in the machining marks.
Another thing I found was that I didn't get any cuts from the castings, its been well fettled. Certainly better than it would have been today.

This is the spring and retaining washer. The spring is sat on the two cast iron jaw plates. There is no mechanism on this vice to stop you screwing the loose jaw right out like there is on my 4" (100mm) Record vice, so I wouldn't have expected to find a spring in there.
