Hi Ken,

Does your machine have a clutch?
The hand wheel it a great idea!

Stu,
No clutch unfortunately on the Macson. The Alba has one and is very handy on small jobs.
Macson also only has a fixed table whereas the Alba is swivel.
At least the Macson has the handwheel for moving the ram. With the Alba it is a matter of turning motor off and use the v pulley.
Next problem is the table lift screw is jambed tight. Large section is jambed fully down with inner small section fully extended with a lump of swarf wedged in the thread.
There is a fine thread on the bottom of the large outer section. I am guessing that there is supposed to be a limiting nut fitted. Another character building job to do.
"Someone" and not me has put some pressure on trying to move the table. Actually sheared off the taper ping driving the bevel gear. Better that than a gear tooth of 2.

Hi Ken,
Good to see it being brought back to life.
Have you looked at some of the Ellliot Shapers?, the only reason I ask is that McPhersons were selling Elliot for a while, and maybe your Macson is related to one of the Elliot models?
Regards
Ray

Mr G,
You are a genius.
Found an 18" stroke Elliott on on the web. The top end is a dead ringer for the Macson. And we bag the chinese for copywrite infringement.
I noticed that the web unit had oiler holes for ram lube. I will be removing the greasers from this one as lubrication has been suspect with a couple of patches of galling on the bottom of the ram midway between the greasers.

Could anybody with a Douglas that has a badge take some photos for me of the badge?
I need some dimensions if possible. Neither of my two Douglases have the badge but I do have a small cnc mill that I could make some out of brass on.
I can then get them plated.
I am on to a lead for an original handle it seems they are cast in Aluminium so this looks like the right time to give Gingery's charcoal foundry a whirl.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks again Bob!
The colour has actually grown on me. It's quite a pleasant pastel green under all the dirt and oil. The old handle actually wansn't joined properly and I could just push it out of its hole. I then tapped that hole and made the handle out of a 5/8" HT bolt from my useful box.
Eric,
my badge is still off the machine, so I'll scan it for you tomorrow. You may be able to just vectorize the image and send it to your CAD package to clean up.
It would be good if you then made a few spares or made the CAM file or G-Code available to other enthusiasts.
Cheers and Happy Easter,
Joe

Eric,
here is the 1:1 scan of the badge. You will need to save the full size image (zoom in then save) to get the best detail.
The dimensions are 155mmm x 23mm x 4mm (pretty close to exactly).
The original is very sooft as Bob indicated. I straightened everything out as good as I could but notice some "wobbles" in the straight lines in the scan still.
Cheers,
Joe

Joe,
Thanks can you give me some idea on thickness? looks like there are two thciknesses to consider.
Also what does the mounting consist of ?

Overall thickness is 4mm as mentioned. I'll go and measure the thickness of the embossed strip at the bottom, but it's around 1mm less.
The mounting is by 2 countersunk 3/16" W brass screws cast into the back. If you were to make the replicas in brass, I'd just solder them on to the back, as the mounting holes on the ram are also countersunk.
Cheers,
Joe
