The Doug Lassie vice looks to be the original so was lucky to score that.
The feed handle is broken and I'll turn up a vertical bit and fit it up in the fullness of time. Would appreciate a photo of the handle so I can copy it. Thinking of brass as it would be easier to shape.

I was wrong about the year as it is a 76 - got excited and somwhow made it into a 77 between the machine and typing it on the computer. Paint is original and this was sold by Hugh Brown in Cannington, Perth. Failry sure it came out of a school as written in texta on the slide was "Finger Danger". Was wondering if there was a different colour for their agents as Hugh Brown were a large machinery dealer over here.

Was after parts manual and better if there is an exploded view so I don't have to rely on my memory to re-assemble.

I'll photo the fabricated handle tomorrow and post it - I have put the wee lassie to bed now.

I'll definately take up your offer Bob and visit your shed soon - will be in touch to organise a time.

Had visitors over for a BBQ but strange they didn't share my excitement in talking about the wee lassie.

I was very lucky the bloke I brought it off delivered it for a carton - can't complain about that.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Congratulations Rod on a very nice pickup
I was going to offer therapy for the affliction but it seems there is enough Douglas owners to start a gang.
    The 'Dougie boys' perhaps.
We also need access to a 3D printer and start printing up some vices.
Hens teeth and rocking horse $%$# I can get, but a douglas vice...

Here's a couple of links for parts manual and brochure

Brochure and parts manual, it's right down in the bottom group on the page.

    Hi Rod,

Congratulations on a fine looking machine, and Welcome to the shaper club!

I hope you are well advanced on planning the CNC conversion..

I think it's getting to where we need to start a separate chapter of the support group just for Douglas owners..

Actually I was serious about the CNC, I'm thinking of upgrading the Varnamo with a stepper driving the downfeed, settable number of steps, triggered each stroke by a proximity switch.. should be simple enough mod, for machines without auto downfeed.

    Regards
    Ray

Why not, I put a DRO on mine...

Interestingly the Prema has power feed on the table. You get to choose (by swapping out a couple of gears) whether you power the cross feed as per normal, or up/down feed the table. Can't do both at the same time. Bit different to power feed on the tool slide so no angle cuts under power unless you're brave enough to swivel the table or add a big tilting angle plate. I've never bothered trying it as yet. Your Varnamo might be able to be configured the same.

Ray, I look forward to that development. I already had a look at the possibilities on the Douglas too....

I know you boys will accuse me of unfurling General Ned's banner but by automating the downfeed you are severing the only tactile connection you have to the machine. Bit like watching someone else plane a piece of wood for you.

Bob I love work I could watch someone do it all day

if you could put an encoder in the ram then run a stepper on a dividing head you could do internal spiral spines (dont know what for but it would be cool)

Helical gears would be useful as well as cool.

Thanks for the link to the manual. I can see the design of the top handle and should be able to fix mine up now.

I do have an obsession with CNC but I also like old iron. I have spent many hours searching the internet for antique machinery and really enjoy the vids of steam hammers, line shafts and like. One I really enjoyed was a bunch of blokes swinging a sledge hammer forging a ship's anchor. I did hobby blacksmithing in the 70's and that hands on feel never leaves you.

I have attached the photos of the box spanner. It looks like four pieces of flat mitred and then welded together. I reckon milling the centre out of solid and cleaning up the corners with a file or better a Shaper might be a way to go. I have made special size spanners on the CNC mill before and they work fine - see photos.

The maunal confirmed the vice is an original so a win there. Have ordered a single phase replacement motor so should be up and running soon.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Here is a photo of the Douglas down-feed handle.
Sorry I haven't cleaned any of it up yet...
Should be easy enough to make in steel.

    Rod,
while you have the handle off, have a look at Bob's mods here: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/do...ations-129407/

I have a vice on my shaper, so I'm right now, but before that I had drawings and was thinking of getting some castings made to machine one up. (This is was not a Douglas vice or shaper)

As a general suggestion, is it worth drawing up Rod's vice so that patterns can be made and sets of castings poured for those in the group who want/ need a Douglas vice? It sounds like several people have Douglas machines so could be worth doing.

    Michael,
I was thinking the same thing, but not being a shaper owner (yet) didn't want to jump the gun. I'd still be interested in castings though as it would seen the likelihood of getting a shaper with a vice would be pretty low.
