I thought it was Davey Crockett too. My mind must be going as well and ya right, it was Daniel Boone. Hmmmm loving getting old.

Hi Kev, Fess Parker also played Davy Crockett, with Buddy Ebsen ( who later on played Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies) as his sidekick.
As you say, more useless info, but I still remember the "king of the wild frontier" song, even now, I'm humming it as I type....

Thanks Davycrocket, and all who've contributed to my confusion..
If the nose of your lathe is 1.5" x 8 TPI and you think that it is 55 degree profile then the thread that you need is 1.5" British Standard Fine BSF, no question !!
Do not confuse with British Standard Whitworth, BSW. Whilst it, BSW, is also 55 degree thread form, a 1.5 diam thread would be 6 TPI
I have a UK manufactured lathe called Denford Viceroy that uses that size backplate as does a Boxford lathe, also made in UK.
I have a couple of brand new unused backplates with thread and registers factory cut . If you really are stuck, I would sell you one for UK £10.00 but I think that the postage to Brisbane would work out very expensive .
See if you can find a 1.5 x 8 TPI BSF tap and run it through your backplate . There is also a UK Ebay guy selling one .
11/2" BSF no3 threading tap | eBay
I was actually seeking a catchplate for between centres turning, and a smaller faceplace than the 11" one I have; I bid on both of these on ebay at once before discovering they didn't fit. I have backplates for 2 of my 3 chucks, I can live without one for the 5" BSA (pictured below) for now.
Here's what I bought before I realized I needed 55deg, these are both 8TPI 60deg. A very nice catchplate, and a 6" backplate that someone has bodged into a light faceplate/catchplate.
They only screw onto my BSF spindle about 1 turn, then stick. By my understanding of the angles, a US nut ought to screw onto a BS thread of the same dia and pitch, so perhaps a light chasing out will suffice, since I don't intend to use them for heavy duty turning, and as you say the thread just holds the plate against the register.--
