Starting a new thread when the topic changes
In the thread titled "Bearings" the original poster was questioned for starting a new thread with a relevant title rather than making his point in an existing thread. That criticism surprised me as I thought it was a good and considerate thing to do. I was part way through typing a reply to that effect (in the "Bearings" thread) when I realised that I was not following my own advice; hence - this new thread.
This is a metalwork forum, and I'll be happy if this topic ends here but I did want to support Anorak Bob on this point. My case in support of Bob's approach is:
1. Unlike the critics in the bearings thread who apparently read every post in every thread, I only open the threads whose title suggests they may interest me. I am well aware that I miss lots of good stuff as a result because most threads change course. It will always be so, but if more posters started a new thread when the topic changes - THANKS BOB - people who read forums as I do would miss a bit less.
2. Where is the downside?
THANKS AGAIN BOB
Graham

100% agree Bob, no downsides as far as I'm concerned. I've been criticised in the past for for creating a thread with new title. Things like "search before you write" scenario.

The first thread was about bearings and so was the second thread, which in my eyes is the same subject. So if someone was interested in bearings they would read the first thread. Also the second thread was only a link to a bearing place which he got from chasing the 1mm ball bearings.
It was the same when the mod's moved the I may have been a bit harsh. thread into the Rego Fix Collet Nut - Can Anyone Help? thread, as it was a carry on from it, but started in a new thread.
I just don't see the point in starting a new thread on something that is already being discussed in another recent thread from the same poster, unless it's a different topic altogether.
If a thread needs a specific title for someone to read, they are going to miss out on a lot of info. In among st most threads there is more information than what is written in the thread title.
