Step by step on making a Square to Round transition
As I am building my cyclone and duct work http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=31169 some people have asked how I go about making bits and pieces, I thought I would post some pics of a step by step on how to make a square to round transition. Sorry its not on video,
For this exercise I will be making a 150mm x 150mm (square) to 150mm Dia (round) x 150mm High as per the drawing in PicRegards

I start out by marking a straight line vertically and horizontally 90deg to each other
Then I mark out plan view of the transition, as its all equal (Not offset) I only need draw up a quarter plan view.Regards

After drawing the quarter circle and without adjusting the dividers I divide the quarter circle into 3 equal parts.
I then number each point and label the top right and left hand corners,
I then mark the height the transition will be on the vertical line that’s on the left hand side. In this case its 150mm.Regards

With the dividers I start from point A and get the distance from each of the points on the arc transferring the measurements on the horizontal line, Labeling each mark as I go.

Once I have transferred all the measurements onto the horizontal line I am ready to start developing the pattern.
I begin by drawing a horizontal line and marking out the width of the square side of the transition (In this case its 150mm). At each end of the line I label it with the letter A
Now with my dividers I get the measurement from transition height point to the point 1 And transfer this measurement over to the pattern. From point A on the right side of the line I draw an arc and the do the same on from point A on the left side of the line crossing the two arcs. This now is point 1 on the pattern.Regards

Next with the dividers I get the measurement from the quarter circle, as its divided into 3 equal parts the measurement should be the same from point 1 to 2 - 2 to 3 and 3 to 4.
Then over to the pattern I mark an arc either side of point 1Regards

Next with my dividers I get the measurement from transition height point to the point 2 and transfer this measurement over to the pattern. From point A on the right side of the line I draw an arc and the do the same on From point A on the left side of the line crossing the two arcs. This now is point 2
Repeat each step until you have all 2,3,4 points marked out on the left and right side of point 1 on your pattern.Regards

Next with my dividers I get the measurement from point A to the point B and transfer this measurement over to the pattern. From point A on the right side of the line I draw an arc and the do the same on from point A on the left side of the line.

Now with the dividers I get the measurement from transition height point to the point B and transfer this measurement over to the pattern. From point 4 on the right side of the pattern I draw an arc and the do the same on From point 4 on the left side of the pattern crossing the two arcs. This now is point B

I now draw a line from point 4 to point B and from Point A to Point B on both sides of the pattern.
Now join the points at the top of the pattern, find something flexible that will enable you to get a smooth line through each of the points.Regards

now add a lap on one side I usually add a 12mm lap on the right hand side
Note that I have not added any flanges on this transition. If you require a flange add it on as shown in pic.
Now you ready to cut pattern out and copy on to your sheet metal.Regards

Once you have cut out your patterns your ready to start folding (break)
For this exercise I will use the paper pattern
I have added some red lines to show how its going to be folded. As its only light folds this can be done over the edge of a bench, angle iron edge, or use a sheet metal folder.
The degree of folding will vary on what size and diameter you transition will be.Regards

After both half patterns have been folded join them together and add your collar. If you have flanges fold them to suit.
Thats it!!!Regards
