taper micrometers
Interesting and uncommon internal and external taper micrometers. Made by the taper micrometer corporation in US.
Quiet day at work so some time to load up so photos from my phone.
Enjoy

Thanks Mark, I've had these saved as an ebay search for years, they rarely come up. However their construction is such that it would be possible to make a fairly good facsimile with a micrometer head, even though it wouldn't actually directly read the taper unless you were to change the barrel. I don't need them very often, so haven't gone to too much trouble in this regard. Generally I know the taper I'd trying to make and/or have the other side to use as a master. Just the same they would be quite nice to have.

Hi Pete, your right. These are not tools you would use very often. I also have a fairly complete set of male and female taper masters that are probably more useful. But sometimes tools come along and you can't say no.
They have an interesting story too. The previous owner had a large precision tool room but he also was an agent for some high end tool brands. In the ?60-70s he was thinking of becoming an agent for the taper micrometer corporation so they sent him these two as samples. He put them in his house and never used or saw them for decades. The business is long gone and he is retired and down sizing. Found them in the back of a storage cabinet so decided to move them on. Luckily to me.
Look forward to testing them when I get home in a couple weeks.
Cheers.

I have read over on PM the internal ones are apparently not very useful, and there are far better methods to use to measure internal tapers..
The external ones however are pretty handy at times... The one Mark has looks to be the small size one, they made a larger version as well...
The one I have is an early intermediate size.. I have used mine with great success grinding tapers on the cyl grinder, getting the angle right.. An example of that was the Jarno taper headstock test bar for the 10EE.
Pete the taper is not read directly, it is just a standard 0.0001 spindle.. You read off a set of tables to get the size..
I really doubt there are many in Oz... A dealer in Melbourne had some internal ones for sale for a optimistic price...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Oh ok, in that case it would be very easy to make one if it's just a mini sine plate. Well, maybe "easy" is relative, but at least theoretically straight forward.

Hi Richard,
I have also read those comments about the internal taper mike on PM. Obviously there is a lot of feel to using the internal taper mike and getting reproducible results. I have a collection of morse/ISO master tapers to practice on though.
I managed to get a comprehensive set of charts for transferring the micrometer readings to a particular taper from Larry Vance on PM so that is very useful.
Having said all that though there are certain tools that are as much art as tool and these fall into that category. Puts a smile on my face every time I look at them.
I have seen the two internal taper mics on Apex machinery's website. They want $375 for each of them. I won't say what I paid but nothing like that.
Good work on the grinder Richard......your making me very jealous with your rapid progress.
Regards from Longreach

Yeah - I thought that when I first started making one too.
These may be of interest

Mark wouldn't the readings be straight sine calculations? So if you know the distance between the sine pins then the calculations are standard. Mind you the only one I remember is 30 degrees. That goodness I have a handy calculator

I also had "Taper Micrometer" set up as an Ebay search and when this one came up in Australia I was quite surprised.
I had a feeling that I was probably bidding against someone on this forum, nice score Mark

Probably one thing I forgot to mention.. As the anvils on mine does not close up fully I initially thought I could not measure small tapers, but a gauge block used to fill up the gap works wonders for small tapers...
They will also measure up 7/24 non stick milling tapers like ISO30/40/50...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.
