Default Tapping square holes, or, tapping holes square?

    Hi th62,
Like Ew, I thought you meant you could snap a tap between 2 fingers and perhaps a thumb. I'm feelin' like a bit of a dill at the moment.
Thanks for the explanation Greg, maybe that's how you could have responded th62.
Still, it's all cleared up now thank goodness so on with machining stuff guys.

    Phil

Yep perhaps, but I don't know how you could tap a thread like that, seems a little awkward and of course you'd probably break a finger first? Here's an idea: how about before we post anything we think might be helpful or interesting we first pass it by Ew, just to see if it really is interesting or helpful, or we could just make it one of the forums rules.

That's a bit unfair, when I read your post about breaking taps with your fingers, I thought the same.. there ain't no way I could break a 5mm tap between my fingers.. but then Greg explained what you must have meant.

Anyway don't get too stressed about it, these sort of misunderstandings happen all the time. Move on.

I've never tried Ewan's power tapping method, with kick and coast, but I've heard of people doing power tapping on a mill and timing when to hit the reverse switch, I remember seeing a youtube video?

    Default Bother, a Procurnier

I’ve just noticed at the bottom of the page under ‘Similar Threads’, Variant22 posted ’Had enough of tapping off-square holes’ and Brobodingnagian in post nine links to a Tubalcain video.

In the video Tubalcain discusses a number of ways of tapping: power tapping, the poor man’s procunier, etc. One of the methods he demonstrates happens to be the method I posted. I wonder if anyone’s told him ‘why bother‘, I’d imagine he’d be gutted.

    Anyway this is the link:

Just make sure you watch it by yourself.
