Those few deleted post really weren't something to get upset about.
They were funny, but not for children.
Yes, I contributed to that. And not, I'm not upset at all. I appreciate the deletion of my posts and the other few with a smile on my face.

No idea what the first comment is about.
With regard the second comment, no. Specifics regarding action taken is between the moderators and the member only. If he wishes to query the action taken he is welcome to. A group of related posts were removed, his were not specifically targeted.
Lastly, the reasons for rules being created are not put in as they would be many pages in length.

I never saw that.... I thought it was my 70's British comedy (are you being served, monty python, two ronnies, benny hill, etc) type post that was deemed to be the problem.. Which was why I could not really follow the reason as I did not think we were that conservative... I was thinking Mary Whitehouse Mary Whitehouse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia must have been a moderator..
One other heavily moderated forum I visit never delete posts, but they get hidden and all anyone else can see is the reason for the hiding of the post.... For example the reason could be "off topic" or "inappropriate" or "spam" or "trolling"
If a whole lot get deleted at once, no one has any idea what was deleted or why..Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

I think i know the post in question......i do agree not for school kids but.....
I think whenever a mod deletes a post a PM should be sent to the poster to let them know it has been deleted and why (with the exception maybe of spam etc). I have had several posts deleted, one of which was purely and simply to prove that an ad that was at the head of the page was inappropriate. I have however had several post go missing that simply have done just that-gone missing. I have not known if they are deleted or a computer glitch has caused them not to show up. A PM from a mod would have cleared this up.1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

Having spent some time as a (not very effective) mod on this and other forums I have little sympathy for this issue - mods also need a life too. The mods have more than enough to do than send individual PMs to cater to the touchy-feely needs of transgressors. The way things develop in a thread a dozen dodgy posts can slip by, which when added together all need to be deleted. Each post may even have a different reason for deletion so would need an individual PM. Not to mention the resulting PM ping pong that will arise with many transgressors. If a mod then has to send out endless PMs providing individual reasons and follow up explanations that could well waste hours of the mod's life.
The (indirect or otherwise) rules are simple - you can post on this forum but be aware that at the mods discretion without warning or explanation your posts may be deleted. If the poster puts this foremost in their mind before they hit the submit message then there would be far less moaning and groaning and less frivolous and silly posts to begin with.
I like a deliberately fuzzy line with no post transgression feedback, it keeps people on their toes and reduces the latent bush lawyer traffic. We all get hot under the collar and have silly moments from time to time, just get used to the fact that some of your posts will be deleted without explanation.
If a member is unsure about a post and are mortally wounded at having their posts deleted they can always send it to a moderator before posting. I have done this on several occasions and have received excellent feedback from the mods.

Ewan, in principle I don't disagree with you, BUT (there is always a but isn't there?) in this case there was not one but several posts that were deleted by a mod, the original post was quickly jumped on by a number of members and amplified. So they all needed to be deleted.
Now I can't remember how many there were, but if a PM was then to be sent to each and every member who had a post deleted, this mod would have spent some time doing that, then he would have had to reply to every reply to that PM that came back, because people almost invariably disagree, then there would have been another reply..................you get the picture.
Please remember that all the mods here are unpaid volunteers and believe it or not, they do have a life of their own as well (and they are actually human, or at least they think so) and they simply do not have the time to spend on that sort of thing.
It is often a popular passtime to criticise the mods and that is part and parcel of the job, even putting up with an occassional dummy spit that would have been better left until the morning when a cooler head usually prevails (as one member posted here).
Another member also posted that sometimes a post gets deleted as "collateral damage", ie it gets deleted because it no longer makes sense after the original post gets deleted.
It is very easy to sit on the side lines and pontificate on what mods should and shouldn't do, but there is an easy way to solve that.
In Announcements there is a request for people to step forward and become a mod

Guess how many members that frequent the Metalwork Forum put their hand up?
Edit: This post was composed whilst BobL posted his, thank you Bob, I would probably not have posted this if I had seen your post first.

Guess how many members that frequent the metalworking section would have seen that thread?(i certainly hadn't) I thought i raised a good point here: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f36/me...-board-157918/ as so many of the forumites that browse the metal working section have no interest in woodworking. Not even one reply.... And now not being able to filter our homepages i bet even less of us look there, i know i don't anymore as its just too hard to look through everything, whereas before i had cut away all the stuff i wasn't interested in. I don't know if similar problems happen with musical instruments, pyrography etc where most posting is done by a group of members that dont stray from those sections, but i know it happens here. Often i posts threads here (like about my health) that i know will be moved simply because if i post it in the correct place none of the members that i am intending to communicate with would ever see it.
I understand the problem of time and PM's. However i know a certain poster started 2 threads about a group buy(i only saw 1). Would he have started the second thread had he known for sure that the first one had be deleted and not just not known what happened to it? A PM in that case saves confusion and more unnecessary deletions in the future.1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

My 2 cents for what they are worth.
The name of this forum is actually "woodworkforums.com" not "metalworkforums.com".
The metal work part is done as a courtesy of the owners of the forum and you get it for free.
If you have no interest at all in woodwork, why not start your own forum, pay the expenses and spend your free time moderating it?
I guarantee you, you will not have very much free time if you do.
If you don't like it, lump it.

Let's not start another flame session.
Go and make something (Metal, Wood, paint, etc) and report back.
ps My metal lathe sits near my wood lathe close to the table saw...............

Agreed, I was waiting for the sort of post like Saisay's and true to form! Truth is, a decent amount of crossover exists between metal and woodwork and I'm glad the metalwork forum exists. The work these guys do is inspiring, so much so, that I'm considering buying a mini-lathe. There's a life beyond the forums, enjoy it

Read what it says above under my name......i am a cabinetmaker and furnituremaker by trade......my hobby is metalworking......I ahve spent some time in the woodworking section and to be frank it is no where like as friendly as the metalworking section...i have had some pretty poor posts aimed at me by MODS in certain threads so i will simply stay here where we (mostly) all get along well and love to help each other out.
The point is IF WE DON'T KNOW THEN HOW CAN WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? if the site needs more Mods then the members need to know.....i would be happy to BUT having just come out of hospital AND having 2 kids under 3 AND running 2 businesses makes my time short already.
the point that this is a woodworking forum has been bought up so many time i am sick of it. How many posts do we have in the metalworking section? go have a look and maybe reconsider.
I am grateful to the powers that be that we have a metalworking forum. But that is not the point.......1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.
