I'm am glad you are saving a machine, i really am.

What really pisses me off is that at some stage there would have been fixtures with the machine. Where did they go? it seems to happen a bit with T&C grinders, where they taken to use on another grinder? Maybe, but then where is that grinders tooling......

The thought had crossed my mind. There must be some black hole filled with T&C accessories surely. Are you suggesting that some folk go to the trouble of selling the bits separately to try and make a little extra?

It is certainly not uncommon to see these machines without their bits. Since our conversation I have been looking the world over at T&C and paying more attention to what they come with. Many don't come with much more than I got and are considerably dearer. Mind you I can appreciate that a Hercus 3A is not exactly a top end machine either.

I hadn't considered that, but i guess some money could be made that way.

I guess most accessories would have been extra's at the time of purchase, too. But who would spend the money on a brand new T&C grinder and not buy at least the basics?

To me a T&C grinder is for milling cutters, taps and maybe drill bits, (ducks for cover) and as a poor mans cyl grinder. Not that i have one.....

Here's a link I sent to Simon the other night to an accessory that might elevate the grinder to somewhere above useless Ew. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221395637672...672%26_rdc%3D1

A simple indexing head would also be a worthwhile addition. The 3A has a similar table to that of the No. 1, worlds away from the 3's vee wayed table, and given the sensitive, effortless traverse of my 1, could, if combined with a few simple accessories, prove to be a pretty handy acquisition.

ps, When I bought my 1 from Peter Fou, he showed me some push rods he had cylindrically ground on the No. 1. At the time he could have used his wonderful Myford cylindrical grinder for the task but chose the Hercus for it's convenience. Fitness for purpose and for that job the Hercus was fit enough.

pps, I started typing this before tea and you blokes have been busy in the meantime. Some time ago, one forum member bought a Hercus workhead for FA at a garage sale. At the time I don't think he knew what machine it had been removed from but he bought it because he thought it might prove handy. The bits and pieces might be out there but even if you chance upon them you have to know what they are.

My guess is most times most accessories spend most of their time in a cupboard somewhere that someone else ends up with at the auction. At least that seems to happen a lot on Grays.

    Hi Simon,
I reckon it is a great buy. I would certainly be happier buying the machine first rather than the accessories first and trying to find a machine later.
I also reckon that as so many are sold without accessories that with continued searching, the accessories will eventually pop up at random times.
It wouldn't be too hard to stick a vice to the mag chuck and place the HSS at your desired angle to take a lick after rough shaping on the offhand grinder.
All up, I, like you, would be pretty chuffed, but then my shed is incredibly basic anyway.

Thats probably a fair bet. Another thing, I'm almost embarrassed to say this but I'm struggling to work out what some of the available fixtures are actually for! I assume that means I don't (yet) need them!

Wow! Phil you and I seem to be on the same wavelength. You summed my thoughts up in a nutshell.

    Simon,

Here are a couple of images showing the table on the No.3 and what happened to that table's ways as a result of over extension and exposure to grinding dust and why the 3A's table was an improvement.

Gee, he saw you coming, they were only$6.75 each brand new, or $12.00 for a matching pair! (in 1935)
That about matches apprentice wages too probably. Anyway a very nice acquisition Tannii51, I really like B&S, Lufkin and other American tooling, and have recently scored some myself, including a B&S 1 - 2" micrometer, several depth gauges, radius gauge set and several spring caliper sets amongst other similar items, including Starrett's version of your matching Vee blocks. I find them a joy to behold (and hold).

    Hi Simon,
It has probably got something to do with the lack of funding in our shed accounts as well

Thanks Bob. One thing I notice with ball ways, while very smooth and frictionless, it only takes the smallest amount of dirt/dust in the ball race to feel it in the movement. Can only imagine one of these with excessive wear or lots of dirt would feel like you are opening an old sliding door!

I started a thread in the Hercus section on the cleanup. Figured since it's my first Hercus and so gives me "right of passage" to post there!
