Default C.C. tool and cutter grinder restoration

I am one lucky guy: PDW in Tassie via Ropetangler, another forum member, sent me a present a few weeks ago. All - most - of the parts of a C.C. Engineering (Glebe, NSW) tool and cutter grinder. Thank you both for making me a very happy vegemite!
Anyway, after complete disassembly and a good cleanup, I decided to derust all unpainted surfaces, polish all the bits I imagine would have originally been polished (handwheels and scales) and clean up all the painted surfaces. Stupidly, I didn't take any photos of the parts as they arrived for comparison.... sorry. Did you by chance Ropetangler?
I can now clearly see how everything goes back together. That was an intial problem, since I've never seen even a photo of a C.C. T&C grinder.
The next step will be putting all the dovetails and sliding surfaces on my surface plate and start measuring and scraping.
After or in between that comes some careful preparation of the very few chipped areas in the paintwork and either a touch-up or a complete respray - haven't decided yet.
Sorry guys, haven't had a chance to take any photos at all yet, but intend to over the weekend. A try with flash in my shed in the dark came out awful and I haven't had a chance to take any pics in daylight yet (see my thread of the trailer conversion - that has taken all my daylight hours priority).
    Cheers,
    Joe

G'Day Joe, I'm sure Pete would agree that it was great to be able to help shift the iron to where it would be appreciated, and Pete said that it was just taking up space, and he had too many big projects to be able to use it any time in the forseeable future. He was up last week-end and picked up the face plate that Ray had surplus to his requirements, pity, I was beginning to think that I might have been able to try it first - but not so .
Unfortunately I have no photos for you either Joe, Peter might, but he has been more or less ofline as his satellite link had gone down, before the promised ADSL was set up. He sometimes goes up to Hobart, with his Mac laptop in tow, but he was hopeful that he may be reconnected sooner rather than later. If you don't hear from him for a while, that will be why.
Good to hear that you have been making progress with it and I'll have a look at your trailer mods tomorrow as its way past my bedtime now. Cheers Joe, all the best,
    Rob.

    Default Another "Bob".....

What would Bob (BT) do? That question went through my mind several times over the past few says - although I tried to suppress it as much as I could....

I made a serious start on my Xmas present from PDW.
Most of the castings are now cleaned up, sanded, chips filled with polyester filler, sanded, spray putty applied, sanded, primed, sanded and gloss epoxy enamel applied.
All the handwheels, scales and way wipers are polished and the column fine sanded (down to 2000 W&D).
What's done looks terriffic! I think Bob would approve
I've got new bearings for the spindle, new felt to cut for the way wipers and started on the motor mount. Spindle housing (complete Z axis really) now on the bench to be started.
I scraped the ways on the base - they were hardly worn with original scraping still visible, pretty flat and as good as I can measure at right angle to the column - ready to match the saddle and then the underside of the table. Once that's straight and flat, I might enlist RayG or Josh's help to grind the top .
The last photo shows roughly how the parts fit together (loosly).
    Thanks BOB

    Very nice Joe

Is the paint sprayed or brush? You have done a great job with the prep work and the finish certainly looks flawless.

Doesn't the Christmas Season agree with you pipeclay? I detect a little pessimism in your tone.....

I thought us hobby machinists were here to MAKE THINGS WORK - that other have given up on.
I guess you think I should have put it together first and see if it works and then make it look pretty? That was my initial thought too - but then I, as I said, couldn't overcome the question "what would Bob do?"
Well now I'm going about it 'ass about' - make it look really nice and suck it and see. And then make it work.
I have a couple of bits and pieces that lend themselves to making a pair of centres, I have a small magnetic chuck that fits on the table and I have a casting that could be machined into a nice indexable collet holder with an air bearing I think.
I look forward to your advice when I get stuck along the way though!
    Cheers,
    Joe

Thanks Peter, I will. Our family is a mother/grandmother/great-grandmother short this year, but we will enjoy each others' company - and remember her.
    Have a great time.

    HI,
As Ueee said Very Nice Joe . The Paint Job looks great. I wonder why they chose to make it in the shape they did, I guess that was what worked at the time. All the Best for Xmas Joe, have a good one.

    Hi Joe,
    Nice color
Its looking a lot better than mine lol
I've been looking at mine lately thinking about alignment, where to start, etc. I've just had an idea that might just fix it with out making a new table.

I know, Bob. It was a joke.

Nice work Joe. I would like to have such a device. Let us know how it goes.
