It is a big compound, it is bigger then the cross slide was on my old AL1000.. It is also hardened..

That power feed in the video is not going to last long going from one direction to the other without returning it to the centre position and waiting for it to stop. It is one of the main things they point out in the manual.
It also wont last 2 seconds if you if the compound hits the end of it's travel, because it has no micro limit switches.
It is clutch protected by the way I installed it, if it hits the end of the travel not much happens other then the unit keeps running but the feed screw does not.. There is no direct join between the unit and the feed screw other then by friction, which is adjustable..

I have been running the power feed on my turret mill for six years like that without any incident, in any case it is a small slide, not a z axis on a milling machine..

Stuart has had a set up for a while now, I tried it years ago but didn't really like it, as I found it awkward.

The top slide has 150mm of travel, therefore it will allow me to turn long tapers like morse tapers... I priced a taper turning attachment for this lathe....$2000.

Couldnt you do the morse tapers as standard, even if you didnt have a long compound travel,or was there a medical reason to install the power travel.

You won't do an accurate one by hand... Well I cannot...You are pushing poo uphill doing it on a lathe to start with (that is why every commercial one is ground), so why not reduce the variables to a minimum that all serve to create a poor quality taper..

The pewer feed unit has not been modified in any way, so I can easily take it off the lathe and stick it in the mill should the need arise...

I never had any that I have done not work as intended, most I cant do with the limited travel of my compound in one go.
Have you considered trying to synchronise your cross and compound to cut tapers.

    Default moese tapers

hi RC ..talking of morse tapers .this tip might aid you . At the TAFE last year I learnt a clever method of turning a accurate morse taper ....

    1. You mount a good accurate commercial morse taper in your chuck .

    2. set up your compound as per normal for doing a taper

    3. this is the clever bit, you use a feeler gauge and as you run the cutting edge of the tool up and down the good morse taper , you adjust the angle of the compound to achieve a level clearance all along the length of the piece in the chuck . After that is done, remove the good morse taper and install your blank in the chuck . You have a perfect angle to cut it ..MIKE

Hi Morrisman, there are a lot of ways to set the top slide, some better then others... I might discuss some of them in the taper turning thread.

    Hi RC,
I didn't realise it was yours, I see what you mean about the clutch type set up on it, good thinking.

These just popped up on PM. Micro-videos of steel and cast iron being cut.

BTW, if you are thinking of posting a thread like this that people will want to keep finding, please put a little thought into making the title easily searchable. Spelling things correctly would be a really good start. end bitch
