I have a HAFCO-DMF 42 vertical mill that I would like to upgrade. It came with stepper motors, PC, software etc to use it as a CNC but the system it a bit old and I would like to freshen it up. Especially moving this into the 64-bi world. I already have a CNC router and 3D printer running from my workshop laptop but the old software for the CNC milling is not compatible.

I was thinking of doing this in steps, mainly from a milling experience and cash point of view.

I started using this machine with the CNC components removed so I could refresh myself with the basics.
I am now thinking I would like to upgrade the lead screws to ball screws but I am not sure how exactly to specify what I need. The current lead screw is about 16mm in dia and has a bit of backlash in it, even after I pulled it down and rebuilt it for a birthday. Ok at the moment but my final step (reinstating the CNC gear) would not like the backlash. I figured the screw upgrade would just be a good all round improvement.

I next would like to fit a DRO to assist wtith my manual milling

Final step would be to retro fit equipment to make this machine CNC.

If anyone could advise on the ball screw selection issue I have, that would be greatly appreciated and any feedback or experiences doing what I am proposing, shared would also be welcome.
