    Cheap and easy to make.

p.s. it occurs to me that I'm not exactly sure what the question is asking.
Advantages over a "proper" reamer, cheap and easy to make. If you're asking something else the answer may well be different.

Well, yes. I should have asked what the d bit is intended to perform as ? Is it a reamer ? Mike

Hi all if you are stuck usually at some un godly hour and you have some drill rod [silver steel] of different diameters can make up a reamer Also great for making a square bottom of a blind bore or drilled hole Cheers

Do they make a true square bottom??? If the end of the D-bit is angled like in the diagram then the end of the hole should peak in my thoughts.

If it was a flat Square ended D-Bit I don't understand how it would cut well while boring the end to square and not jam up.

Hello the d bit can be used to take out the vee bottom 118 deg included angle until you have a flat base.this is a improvisation tool in a sense that it was usually made out of neccesity more than normal finishing tools.another omission is that it needs to be cleared often and flooded with some form of cutting lubricant. It isused quite succesfully in cast iron due to the chip swarf particle .another thing it is a finishing tool where small amounts of material removed.these tools come from a very early era of machining where treadle power was used and these tools razor sharp then honed. Hope this helps and open to other's input John.
