    Default Welding Courses

    Hello everyone

    My name is Andrew McBride

I'm form the UK, here on a working visa.
Basically I'm after some advise, any would be greatly appreciated.
Back home I'm a fully qualified plumber gas fitter, I had a bit of pipe fitting experience years ago and just before I left the UK had a few days more and remembered how much I liked it and now would really like to get in to the trade over here.
I just need to find somewhere or someone who can teach me the how to weld so I can get my foot in the door. I know someone who can get me in to an oil refinery in Brisbane but I would defo need some sort of welding course first.
I've seen some welding courses near Brisbane but they're $200 per day! seems a bit much to me?

    Thanks for reading

There are welding course run at night at TAFE colleges but they are aimed at the home handyman for DIY & the certificate that is issued at the end means bugger all.

If you want something that will give you a certificate, you'll have to spend a bit of money.

If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

    Default Tafe

The TAFE courses can be hit and miss in terms of training. It depends a lot on the individual teachers you have. Some of the teachers don't give a hoot .. they are usually tradesmen nearing retirement , they get the teaching job as it has' perks ' . I am sounding cynical but you can only relate what you have seen. Maybe its my age , but the teachers don't seem to take you seriously if you are over 35 . I've been in TAFE classes with teenage apprentices . A 18 year old girl in my class wanted to learn welding , the teacher I had thought she was nuts and wasting her time ... he was an older teacher who thought girls should wash dishes all day . MIKE

    Thanks for the advise guys,
I was looking at the TAFE courses but they seem to take ages, I wanted something a bit quicker. suppose I'm just gonna have to pay for it.
I'm not too concerned about getting a certificate It's more about the training for me, as a lot of company's I've been looking at are not looking for certs just people who can weld.

    Thanks again

Hi Andrew, $200 a day to learn to weld well enough to achieve ZERO defects -- the standard necessary for the sort of welded structures I'm involved with in my day job -- seems cheap to me

Yeah think I'm gonna go down that route, try and get some unpaid work with a welding company.

    Cheers

Just seems quite a lot as I'm not working at the mo, perhaps something to think about when I find some work.

    Thanks

    Hi Andrew
I appreciate it seems a lot, especially if you're not working, but to give you some perspective, up until a year or so ago a friend was the plant manager for one of the explosives plants in central Qld. One time, when the plant was shut down for maintenance one of the tasks was to replace 200 tubes coming out of the top of a pressure vessel. The plant could not restart till every one of the welds attaching those 200 tubes was perfect -- and for every day the plant remained closed beyond the agreed 4 week shutdown, he had to pay his customers $150,000 in damages.

Your story about working as a welder within an oil refinery resonated had me thinking you would be expected to be competent with a similar task
    regards from Alberta, Canada

OK I suppose $200 a day isn't too much to ask then, ha.
I know this may sound a bit of a silly question but how long would you think it would take to teach someone to weld to satifactory standard for an oil refinery, being taught 8 hours a day?

    Cheers for the info
