Default What's a good 3" drill press vice?

As the subject guys... I'm starting to look for a 3" (possibly upto 4") vice for my drill press.

I don't care for cheap Chinese stuff and would much rather have a quality new one or an old quality one.

I've heard the old Waldown ones are good but seem to be as rare as the proverbial hens teeth, likewise with the Dawn ones.

I think I've heard good things about Vertex and Palmgren in the past, but aren't sure.

I use the drill press for holes that I can't do in the lathe so accuracy is generally important.

So there's the rub, what would you recommend?

    Thx
    Jon

    Hello Jon,

I have a bit of a collection of vices. https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...92#post1286292 Palmgrens are OK, I have found the little 1 1/2" wide vice with the bolt down lugs extremely useful. The adjustable angle vice I've used once.

The vice I most often use on the drill is the standard 3" Waldown. It is equipped with hold down clamps which bolt into the table's tee slots ensuring security. Nothing worse than a vice moving went you don't want it too. There is one on eBay at the moment - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Waldown-M...item2c8993b450 Sadly the vice has a few holes in it.

Bob, have you got a picture of the vice hold downs?

    Thanks,

I have Mike. I even have a rough drawing of a clamp that I think I posted here. l will have a look when I get off the bus. They are pretty simple things and wouldn't be difficult to make if that's why you are asking.

That was easier than I thought! - https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...17#post1705717
