A decade ago one of my brothers worked as a case manager for a small private social services organisation that helped mental health patients and drug addicts get back into the community after being in prison for drug related offences. My brother also supervised a small wood work workshop which was a part of the orgs day care centre where clients could drop into for a coffee, a chat, or to use the facilities, computers/printers etc. The WW shop was open a couple of days a week and they just used few donated hand tools. Management liked what my bro was doing with the clients in the WW shop so management decided to expand the workshop and acquire more suitable tools/machines etc so with the help of my brother applied for a government grants and they were mostly successful.

The funds came through when my brother was on extended leave. Meanwhile one of the clients who said he was knowledgable about such things talked management into purchasing two large chainsaws and a chainsaw mill! The client immediately proceeded to us a chainsaw to cut up a winters supply of firewood for himself. A few days later my bro returned from leave and drew the attention of management to the risks involved so everything potentially risky was locked in a cupboard. My brother tried to return the chainsaws but because they had been used the supplier would only give them peanuts. After a few months my brother asked me if I was interested in purchasing the chainsaw gear and that is how I got my big milling chainsaw.

All this does is reinforce a decision I made a long time ago that I intend to die with my boots on. They can shove their retirement village, nursing home and palliative care pathway right up their wherever... I'll slip up and sever an arm or leg and bleed out on the floor but it'll be MY floor.

What we need and what we want gradually become two very different things as time goes by. Then eventually comes the time when both are interchangeable.
