7 Seas on a Jr. Retro
I call the blank 7 Seas because I used 7 different colors in making the blank (5 actual cups, but 7 colors used to make the 5). I wish I were better at photos. I have a really hard time getting photos to look like the actual pen. I added a custom finial because the gold dome would have been really ugly with this blank. Plus, custom finials look so good with these kits. I would have removed the gold band at the center band if I was sure I wouldn't ruin the piece. Even though the kit looks sort of gold in the 1st picture, it's actually rhodium with gold accents.

Nice work on the blank & the pen. I particularly like the custom finial touch I may have to try that.

BSea,
An attractive blank you have created Pic one is lit badly see top, bottom then compare the second pic which is even softer.
Try laying the pen and parts down lighting different ways focus on the pen parallel to the camera for a while, vary the depth of field by trying around F12 minimum then vary the exposure speeds, lesson the lighting increase and decrease the speed shoot several shots, try different backgrounds.
Now I am no expert however I have developed a formula that works easily, quick set up once you get it right a sure way to record pens.
I attribute some success to using a tripod, indeed a real good tripod as well to support the camera. My open frame I use to support the pen I leave on top of a cabinet in the lounge room the frame made of conduit, no diffuser ever used.
If you would ever speak to me again I will take the risk and include a pic of the open box and wish you well.

Hey Peter,
No offense taken I assure you. I really struggle with getting anything above an average picture. It seems like the best ones are the ones I've taken outside on cloudy days. The 2 pictures I included were from different settings. The 1st one was taken outside (sunny day). The 2nd was inside. Neither one really picked up the emerald green that's in the pen.
I do have 1 of those cheap collapsible light tents from ebay, but I was too lazy to set it up. I don't really have a space that I can leave it up all the time. But I would really like to see your setup.
Probably what I really need to do is take the time to really learn how to take good pictures. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.

Ok, I've really been working on my photo skills since this was originally posted. Here are some new photos using a light tent, and finally getting some of the manual controls worked out. I was so happy with the results of this picture, that I didn't even care that I failed to get the whole pen in the picture. This picture hasn't been modified as far as color or contrast or anything other than to crop & resize. I have never been able to do that before. And it actually looks like the pen.
And the cap from another picture. I like this side vrs the side I used in the upper pic because it shows some of the emeral dgreen in the pen. I really want to thank Peter for making me take so time to learn to use my camera. I know these pictures won't win any awards, but they are so much better than the 1st ones.

Bob,
Worth any time you spent and if you do it every time it will become real easy to both remember and do. the result is astonishing doing justice to your careful work. The whole world has banked up on us for ever it seems so it has prevented me from getting quality workshop time. Getting there this next week. That result is excellent. The sample pics showed from me the system I used some uncropped etc for that purpose.
Spankingpigeon that pic of my take of a Sparkplug is a Corian top African Ebony Hexagon cut Streamline centre band. A year or so back as a fling I bought a 30 yr old Mercedes and found a mechanical genius who cut his teeth as an apprentice Mechanic with Mercedes creating a wonderful experience with that car I gave it to him as gratefull thanks. This guy is a hunter most times bow and arrow up in the arctic shot the second biggest hodiac Bear on record has it mounted with two wolves and a half eaten deer stashed up the back of his workshop. , races top level motor bikes has a stable of them quite a character.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum
