Accompanying Box (Spalted Myrtle)
Couldn't help but make a pen box for the Spalted Myrtle Baron.
What do you think?

Beautiful as usual David, in this case I would consider putting a different and plain colour on the bottom, in that way the pen would stand out a bit more, at the moment it is camouflaged in its own setting. Amos

Very nice, really complements the pen. Do agree with Amos and Ian that a different colour or material to line the bottom would make the pen stand out better, but beautiful work, love it, cheers, Des

David as you stated accompaning box is quite removed from the round pen creating a similar but startling difference with the nestling pen striking in that box. Also I have no doubt your pic is hardly displaying in its dark colour a problem common to most of us.
My experience is the difference is heightened in front of you and tinged by excitement the way the grain is with on the box and crossed in the pen.
Both match nicely never dissapointed by any of your boxes and that pen is smooth as with great depth, the box suits the shape with open graining.
A keeper as usual.

As much as a different colour in the base of the box would make the pen stand out more, but I love it the way you have presented it. AMAZING!

With my boxes, I try to keep the whole box in the same timber. Galleries like it more as well because they think that if you use a plainer timber on the base, it ruins the whole appearance of the box. I agree with the view point of the galleries. With a lighter base in the box, yes it makes the pens stand out but degrades the appearance of the box.
Wasn't really happy with the earlier photos because it didn't seem to do the box any justice.
I had to pull out the light tent and do it again.
What do you guys think about it now?

Hi David,
No problems my views except now you have chosen a black background and added the knife, not apples with apples but the view in the box is clearer in the second pics and the cap of the pen detail is lost in the second pics this may be down to my screen viewing being different but I can see the rounded pen detail and the paper knife handle detail quite well enough to say again the straight grain on the box contrasts well with the cross grain of the two other items the pen and knife handle..
I mean no controversy only confirming I do like the matching timber personally which is expressed by Galleries. Proof positive since sales are your objective the customer sure controls the methodology. Lately it seems to me easier to tick the like box I am sure by now everyone is in no doubt my sharing motives. I would always seek to improve my handling of dark objects to show maximum detail in my photographs. Yesterday in my workshop clearing up I found a series of four pics of a mate of mine we used to have on our studio wall he used to work in a country newspaper transposing pics to plates for the newspaper after all these years I tracked him down to the Sydney area where he retired after 30 odd years at the Conservatorium of Music teaching etc Flute and Recorder offering this group where the emulsion was peeled off the colour prints and transferred to a wood faced Masonite, he is coming to visit to collect as a gift from me and Wilma. He is rare that he has perfect pitch so I superimposed by double exposure the tiny image in the bottom right hand corner This in the early days before colour television when our Studio Portraits were mostly B&W selectively toned a then hand coloured.. Life has a lot of twists so nowadays I choose the easy ways to take pen pics.Howard Quick Pic-001.JPG
