    Default Amboyna from Vanuatu

I was gifted this pen blank a few years ago by my mate Peter (Penpal)
Its been sitting in the top draw in the cabinet beside my pen lathe, finally decided it was time to turn it into a pen.
I used a stainless steel Desire Rollerball kit from Lazerlinez.
    Its got a CA finish.
I have been using BSI Super Gold CA, it doesn't seem to be affected by the extreme humidity we have had here lately, unlike some of the other brands I have used previously which I could only get a decent finish in the cool drier months.

That is a spectacular pen. The components and amboyna work well together

Amboyna Burl is a stunning wood and you have done a wonderful job displaying its beauty in this pen.

    Thanks

A friend once sent a shipping container of this wood to Canada to a dealer who breached payment saying it was not up to snuff. Here you are proving it is,I have always known it was.

Marvellous grain anddetail in the cap area where I swear I can see mysterious faces. Love colour and the turning mate.

Thanks all all for the nice comments .
I have a huge hoard of lovely bits of timber, every now and then one calls out to me, doing justice to them is a challenge .

There are a few faces in that cap Peter, well spotted, they are harder to see in the photos than when looking at the pen in hand.

I hope your friend didn’t lose out too badly on that deal.
This Amboyna is different to most of the other bits I have turned, it has more red and orange, less dark browns, slightly different smell. It was nice to turn, it cut beautifully with the skew.

The blank was labeled “Amboyna from Vanuatu “ , the other bits I have turned were given to me, and I think they originated in the Phillipines, I had assumed variation in the species due to distance.

"Amboyna" is the name applied to the burl of PNG Rosewood which likely also grows in Vanuatu

This is what Amboyna burl from SE Asia looks like. An old block I found lying around! Showing the most recent cut face of a block.
Other faces would show nice birdseyes. The contrasting cream-grey sapwood is nice too. These woods get much darker and more intense with a finish applied of course.
I find the reddish-orange wood the most attractive and the burl heartwood is almost always reddish. Its more reddish than shown here where colour gets washed out for reasons I don't understand.

The bloke in Canada completely broke, he never recovered a cent. The shipment was the result of a years gathering in the jungle by a team of men. He sold me a table full of what he had left.Mans inhumanity to men.

Nice sample Euge. It seems like it goes by a few different names, the other bits I have turned were labeled Narra Burl/ Amboyna, it was darker, heavier, and smelled like fresh cow dung when freshly cut. Pretty sure I 2 pen blanks left.
Here are a couple of pens I made with it.

And one that went wrong when pressing the bits together, these Liberty’s are a tight fit, and need to have the brass tube reamed out to make them fit better, otherwise this can happen.
