    Default Australian Ebony

A 2-tone piece of Australian Ebony (Dyospyros humilis) on a Stainless steel Eagle Rollerball. It has a CA finish.
First 3 photos are taken under my diffused LED lights, the last one is taken using natural light, in the shade beside my house.

Really beautiful job on that one. Yet again proving that we don't need to import timbers into Australia - we have amazing stuff right in our back yards (though some back yards are a few thousand hectares)

That kit is damn nice as well

    Cheers

    Cheers Pete and Gabriel.
Yes our timbers will rival anything in the world. Some of it is very hard to get hold of though, you won’t find them at your local hardware store.
Euge just sold a piece of Australian Ebony to some lucky buyer, not sure if he has any pen blanks though.
This stuff is difficult to dry, it cracks very badly. This pen blank was completely solid, it was coated in wax, and has been sitting in my shed for about 10 years, but I have others that were treated the same way, that didn’t fare as well.

My comments on here and elsewhere re pics still stand Brad love the pen. I find a kikker using an 8 watt small fluro above achieves a result as well with my LED lamps. I note Bunnings have new very cheap builders LED lights for the left and right would be excellent. I sent a result using my set up with a pair of the previous builders lights LED to an expert since forgotten in the old era of when I was a photographer,he sold me a light pink sheet to assist in colour balance, works for me.Beauty Brad.

Thanks for your comments Peter, appreciated as always mate.

So I am curious about the pink sheet, do you use it as a background, or to reflect light onto the scene ?

As you can see, I am not getting my white balance as good as I would like. I am adjusting in Post Processing, and the pics are all a bit different, I change my diffusers around sometimes for each pic to try and get what I am after, but I use white copy paper as well as white foam, and this could be causing the issue.

Edit- I just reread your post Peter, maybe you are using the pink sheet instead of a white sheet, to take a custom white balance reading under your lights ?

Great looking pen Brad. It's a pity some special blanks are so hard to season without becoming damaged in some way. Sometimes that is good as you can fill them to make a feature of it but usually it's just wasted your time and effort.
For a novice when it comes to photography, all the photos look the same to me except the one you took in natural light which shows the sheen of the CA better. As far as showing the features of the blank they all look good.

    Great Pen Ironwood!!

Yes, I agree this ebony wood is a bugga of a species, no matter how carefully you dry or store it. It has a small back heartwood and a pink (often spotted or streaked) "intermediate wood" and a thin cream colour sapwood. But it is interested and worth the effort.

Yes, I can find or cut some small penblanks or similar sizes if anyone is interested. Also have another species with a more spotted wood (D geminata?) which I can offer and a some other species (Asian US and Central American) if anyone is interested.

Well there you go, if anyone is interested in obtaining some of this rare and beautiful timber, it is possible thanks to Euge.

Thank you Ironwood, but its true... if its unusual, uncommon or rare there is a good chance I have some (in small sizes usually).

I would love to have a tour of your shed, it would be a feast for my eyes.

    Ironwood,

I had the tour recently whilst buying some of Euge's timber. Was well worth the travel time to see, meet and talk with Euge !

Cheers Don. If it was less than a days drive, I would probably make the trip, would end up buying a few pen blanks while there I am sure .

    Thanks Don,

It was great to meet with you and your wife when you visited me in Warragul and had a "short tour".
What is great to see is how pen turners make and present their pens. My interest is mostly in the "what timber" is used, rather than the how you did it (turning fittings, finishing). BUT I do truely do admire any woodworker who can show the beauty of wood to greatest effect. In fact I have some pens "on order" from Gab ... cant wait to see them.

Great to see the interest and response to Peter's urgings for pen-turners to show their skills as amateurs or skilled makers.
Thanks, the resurgence makes this forum so much more interesting.
