    Default Baron II in offcuts

It's been a few weeks since I last posted a pen so I thought I would share my latest. A few weeks ago I offered to make a pen for a friend and he requested a fountain in any timber. So I used four.

Baron II FP from Timberbits. Cap is River Red Gum and Silky offcuts. Body is Jarrah leftovers between what I think is Spotty Gum (recycled from a 1960's Southport verandah post). Stripes are from a damaged aluminium water bottle. Finished with CA.

There is some "damage" under the clip where the alum was just too thin and the silky's grain picked up a bit of alum fines from sanding for my liking. Assembly was a little more complicated than usual. Overall I'm pretty happy with the result.

    Default Imagination

Very imaginative design, well done. Did you use thick CA to glue the timber to the aluminium when building up the blank. Have you tried the same with copper or brass sheet?

Thanks for the comments guys. My mate has already seen a photo and loves it.

Yep John - a lot of extra work went into this one. I wanted to see if I could manage a serviceable result. I did think about re-doing the cap but decided the 2nd time around might end up the same so quit while I was ahead. I need to do a couple more before I agree to a monetary commission piece. For the extra effort and possible, it really needs a higher end kit.

Gingerbeer - I decided on the same Sika polyurethane I use on tubes. I thought about 2-part epoxy but only had dregs of some old stuff and had plenty of Sika on hand. Advice on glueing alum is to roughen with sandpaper then coat and glue as quickly as possible before any surface oxidation limits adhesion. Haven't tried any decorative work with copper and brass but have trimmed and turned both on my woodlathe when adapting some coffee gear. Good idea though.

I like the angled cap. I might do some bodies the same way in the future, keeping the angle a bit more obtuse though so the finished timber isn't so thin at the join of timber and metal. I had to fill in with CA and sandings under the clip where the Red Gum became really thin and flaked away.

The biggest issue for anyone thinking about it, is square and maybe dimension each of the lamination timber types to the same extent so the blank is as symmetrical as possible around the feature. It's not enough for the glued faces to be flat if you want to drill in the centre so the result is balanced. Seems obvious but hey - they're offcuts!! I only did the faces and had to do a lots of shaping just to drill where I wanted.
