    Default Beall Pen Wizard

    Hi All

Has anybody in Aussy got the Beall Pen Wizard and how do you get on with it. I want to buy one but don't want to spend $450 including postage just to find out it's not what I immagine it to be.
With kind regards and may the wood chips fly

I think Neil (dai-sensei) has one of these and gawdelpus (John) has used it as well, so hopefully they will reply here.

Was just reading through The Pen Turners Bible by Richard Kleinhenz and he has a chapter or two on the Pen Wizard in that book. He shows several different ways of using it, but is not entriely complementary, he syas and I quote:

"The Pen Wizard has a lot of slop; mine has more than 1/16. Such variation could destroy a pattern, so be sure to hold the tool to the same side of the slop for every plunge cut"

Carrolls used to have these ,not on his site that I could see though . Another thing to keep in mind is they are designed to work with a dremel tool ,so you need one of those as well . They are very compact and can be used on a table ,a lot of time can be consumed in doing a blank so sitting down is almost a necessity ,its all hand driven and again time consuming .The results can be very interesting depending on your choice of gearing ,if you could find a second hand one may be worth a look as they are not likely to wear out too quickly hehe , cheers ~ John

    Islander,

I also have one, which I bought later last year. They have improved them from the earlier made ones but could still be better made.
I have only used mine a couple of times to create some spiral cuts to a couple of timber pen blanks for later filling since getting it, and I was happy with the outcome.
I would like to, when I am not so time poor experiment with it as I think there are various cuts that can be made depending on how you set it up.
They are pretty pricey for what they are though and I do not think it is a piece of kit you would use on a very regular basis, but great for that something different every now and then.

    Cheers
    Tony.

I seriously considered buying a pen wizard, on the basis of it looking like a cool toy, but didn't.

I've just done a pen where I cut a diamond pattern by hand - it wasn't as difficult as I'd feared, so I'm still not sure if I'd buy one, or have a few more goes at patterning by hand.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

You done a great job on yours Andrew to me it seems just enough without overdoing it and I am sure your dad would have loved it. I am sure somewhere in this or the IAP forum I have seen where members have modified the beal to improve the use and reliability. If I can find it I will attach it later.

    Cheers Ian
