BETULA pendula AKA Karelian,Masur,Downy or Silver Birch.
From the Northwest of Continental Europe. Faberge made one of his famous Eggs from this timber for the Tzar of Russia in 1917.

Lovely pen Peter and looks great in this "fatter" style.
And what an interesting wood (A willow... oops a meant a Birch) too from Nthn Europe. Works well turned as pen too. You often doesn't see it. I didn't know about Faberge.
