    Default Birdseye Black Wattle

Some Black Wattle I rescued out of the scrap pile.
I would normally put the clip over the sapwood, but it would have been a shame to cover up the Birdseye, so it went on the line between light and dark wood.
Again, a high gloss CA finish, just doesn't show under my lights.

I’m glad you rescued the wattle from the scrap pile.
    Two very nice pens.

Thanks,I am glad I saw it before it was thrown out. It is one pen, heartwood on one side, sapwood on the other.

Wow, I'd love to get my hands on a big piece of that. It might even be right for a ukulele or guitar.

Cheers Len. Not very big bits of this I'm afraid, I cut a slab of Black Wattle up to make a new door frame in my house, there were a few small clumps of this along one side which got trimmed off. Got enough for about 4 pens. I will have to check the other 20 or so slabs from the same tree in the shed, maybe a bit more there.

Cheers Peter. Those slabs have had plenty of time to dry, been in one of my sheds for about 18 years now. It cut nicely with the skew as well.

I am just having a bit of a speculate really. I've been looking at the Cole Clark guitar tonewoods on their website and they are making a lot of guitars out of acacia melanoxylon. Ukuleles are traditionallly made from hawaiian koa which is also an acacia. At the moment I am working on one faced with western red cedar (also used by cole clark) from an old door and another with close grain douglas fir from an old doorjam. Ukes don't need much wood, even 80-100mm will do.

Cheers MIK. A bit more character in this one than the average blank, but its still sitting in the display with no takers yet, a couple of plainer pens beside it have sold though.

Hi Len. The majority of the timber I got from this tree doesn't have much or any feature, the piece this pen was made from was from a small section that had a bit of figure along one edge about 20 mm wide. It's mostly just a dark caramel colour with the white sapwood on the edges. But if you are interested in a piece, send me a PM, we could probably work something out.
