    Default Birth and Resurection

been playing at the fiddly bits again

first is a new blank Red Gum V Section, Tassie Blackwood on the sides, Huon Pine and Coconut Palm for the center and a few strands of Aluminum thrown in, yes a strange assortment but just testing the waters to try out glues and woods

second - Huon Pine, Cross Cut Red Gum and some Aluminum well you may recognize this from a previous thread where i said that it died, with the help of a bit of determination and a hose clamp or 2, she is all resurected

i have also attached a couple of photos of my hack together thickness sander, someone might find the idea useful

Comments, Criticism, Questions - go for it

    all the best

well done Mik ! it's not always worth the effort to resurrect failures ,(more time than they are worth), on the other hand the experience is invaluable ,and in this case has produced an outstanding result
Not sure of your sanding jig though? no idea how that works cheers ~ John

Nice segmenting there, good to see the "never give up" pen being resurected, sometimes we just cant let it beat us.

i took my unused, well rarely used belt sander and clamped it down to a stable base on its side, there is a piece of pine in front of the front roller just to raise the piece that is to be sanded, the other piece is the fence like on a table saw, this piece is screwed down at a point just past the roller as a pivot for the fence

you can see from the black mark that i have changed the angle of the sander, by pushing the wood past the end of the roller there is now very little flex where as before the roller was pushed away from the wood very easily

the clamp on top of the sander is only to hold the sander down and easily remove it to change belts

i have attached a different angle which may help, if you need more i can do a thread just on the sander with better pickies if you want

all the best and thanks for looking

    Default Aluminium

Hi Mik, Nice work. On the couple of times I have included aluminium in a segmented pen the Al seems to discolour the wood when I give it a sand before applying the CA. Most notable with light colour wood like Box Elder. Have you had this problem, if so how did you get around it.
    cheers

i have not had this problem at yet ( i am sure i will now though), the light colored woods that i have used in general have been solid woods

maybe try a coat of thin CA before sanding which might harden the lighter woods to stop the AL getting a hold

the aluminum i am using is only coke can so it is extremely thin haven't even tried to measure it if you can

    i hope this helps
