Blackwood pen
New JB fountain pen dressed in Blackwood. CA finish. Having second thoughts as to whether Gold was the right match.

Nice to see a fountain pen for a change.
I quite like the slightly more subtle, but still clearly blackwood appearance of that pen. I think you might be right about the gold though. Hard to tell by photo though.

I struggle with blackwood a bit on matching a plating, too. I think gold vs. something more neutral depends on how you feel about gold in general, so beauty might be in the eye of the beholder!

Mapleman, thanks, I appreciate the offer. It was more a tongue in cheek praise of your figured blank that was recently turned by another forumite.
this pen actually has a meaning and purpose as it's from part of a load of timber I was given so in thanks I have made my work colleague this pen. And (via a thread in the box making section) am making a box to house this. Coming along nicely as first fancy box. I will post pictures on here when all complete.

It is very hard to beat superbly figured timber for anything one makes (IMHO) but, the quality of work will always shine through as well. Your pen looks to be quality work, so congratulations. I happen to like gold too.
In my case I often depend on the superb figure in the timber to bamboozle the viewer into thinking it is good!
