Burly Cigar

Hey fellers. Just finished this Cigar pen dressed in Brown Malley Burl, kindly sent to me last year by our mate Seriola. Lots of eyes in this stick. Part of this foot-long blank was a bit jig-saw crumbly, but managed to get through it without blowouts with a super sharp gouge. Usual 20 coates of Thin CA then MM then Brasso + MaGuires Speed Glaze. Even though this 'process of ingredients finish' takes about 20 minutes to complete from bare wood to hard glassy finish, the effort & time spent is more than worth it. Why even bother to turn pens if you just want to batch them out like sausages and put some crappy lazy finish on them. Might as well go buy a $ 2.50 plastic Bic !. Take the time to learn how to do things properly, and enjoy the pride of a lovely 'Hand Crafted' article by your own hands.

Thats a great looking Pen there Pariss. The Brown Mallee is nice stuff.
Your finish looks spot on.
What lighting do you use for your photography ?

Hey Ironwood. The photo set up is almost cave man like, but works for me ha ha. Just set up outside at rear of shed on a roller stand and a bit of plywood ontop. Not full sun, just afternoon filtered sunlight. Very basic.

Thats pretty well how I do it as well, I am using a floor tile for my background ( traded up from a piece of melamine ).
You seem to be getting better looking gloss on your pen than me, some days I seem to do better than others. I am just using a small compact Canon camera on auto, so probably could do better if I worked out how to use the camera on manual.

Beautiful pen Pariss.

The brown mallee burl done in CA is a brilliant finish. Mallee burl is hard to beat and very Australian.

Hey Ironwood. Yeah, my camera is also a little Canon, IXUS 200is 12.1 Mega pixels' I have it set on Auto but get close enough to the subject so that the Macro kicks in automaticly. Funny, I have a top of the range NIKON SLR camera I saved up for and bought just before the digital camera revolution arrived. The camera set-up cost me a small fortune, but now sits in the wardrobe gathering dust, as it can't compete with the 'better quality' little digital cameras these days.

Very nice Pariss, the finish on your pens is superb and always shows up so well in your pics. The finish on mine never look as good in pics as in the flesh, a problem a lot of others also have.

Will have to photograph and post pics more often to practise. Either that or send them to you to take pics and post along with a few burl blanks as barter. AS LONG AS YOU SEND THEM BACK (the pens not the blanks)

Never look a gift horse in the mouth I say as well.

Please describe punky, crumbly to me with a pick and I will post a pic with your permission on this post with what I call punky, crumbly Brown Mallee and some oh so tight Brown Mallee. One time got 2000 sticks of Brown Mallee and sold it all in a few days at my cost to members of this forum, inspected every one and rejected any
"faulty" ones. I have a passion for Brown Mallee and a number of other timbers.

Reason for my pics there is a disease? or something like dry rot that occurs with Brown Mallee that I know some turners like looks like sawdust stuck together in parts of a log, I chuck it away.

Your pen is a masterpiece of workmanship a real credit to you and yas you have got CA boxed and know how to get the best out of it, love that Mallee.

After looking closly, I have discoverd a defect...that pen is Australia, when it should be in Texas!

Think I will pick up some McGuires speed glaze next time I am at the auto paint store, that shine would shame the most avid finish junkie!

Hi Peter (Penpal) I think the term "Punky", originated in the USA. It means soft, begining to decay, spalted, but of coarse still useable to us. Crumbly, is what I call a really intense piece of burl, that is beginning to unravel at the eyes or knots. A nice soak with CA will have it sorted out.
