Thread: Busy weekend

Certainly a productive weekend. delightful groups of kits and colour , shapes. Too many for me to isolate enjoyed them all for different reasons.

Please keep up the good work. What a huge number of finishing methods and materials, I will be interested in your choices and methods in time to come.

This is great place to learn as well as share.

Thanks Peter, I am still trying to find a few finishes that I like. The organoil is okay but never gets a really high sheen, the smell is fantastic and for my low sheen finishes, it's probably what I will stick with for now, still using the glow olish over the top. It really brings out the natural colour of the timber without adding it's own colour.

The shellac is still a very new product for me, I only bought it on Saturday afternoon. I would love to get a french polsh level of finish to the pens for something different but that would be a very big ask at the moment.

Nice selection of work there! the experimenting never stops hehe, each individual has to find what is good for them ,and the material they are using ,doesn't seem to be a universal super ,non fail finish for all hehe.Enjoy the Journey Cheers ~ John

Good on you paul. good selection of kits, shapes and timbers.

I tried CA before I ever joined these forums. Thought to myself after peeling it, and sanding it, off my fingers that there was no reason it wouldn´make a good finiish. First results wre patchy but it was through the forums, and the IAP forums that I learnt to refine the techniquie.
Still trying to perfect it!!

So, keep reading and keep trying!

Danish Oil also very good, need many coats and lots of drying time, patience needed, but a good natural finish, Amos

Amos, I have a tin of Danish oil so I'll try that on my next pen. How does it wear? Do I need to seal it in with anything like GLOW?

My main user at work is an oil finish (really don't remember what oil it was though) and I love it. Honestly the oil has been replaced by the oils in my hands from use but it feels like wood and is a long way from glossy. Its a nice olive wood Sierra and I find thats the pen I reach for the most. I have a nice fountain pen in Buckeye Burl with a good CA finish. It has held up well but I usually get that when I want to impress someone... as I have said elsewhere, nice pens

Corbs, my go to pen is the slimline Jam that you helped me turn, mainly because it's the first pen I made. I'll give the danish oil a go this weekend, I have a few pens to turn for Christmas.

Nice batch of pens there. I like the mango Sierra and the Purpleheart Slimline best. Good work.

Nice bunch of pens there. A little suggestion but not trying to be too critical, try and give your sierra's a little more shape like you have with the slimlines. IMHO it gives them a better feel and more balance.

I may be mistaken, but isn't Glow largely shellac anyway, so using plain Shellac is probably not going to give you anything different anyway?

Thanks for the tip, I'll definately incorporate more shape into the next sierra's I do. The wife keeps telling me to do straight pens instead of these curvy bulb type ones in the slimlines but I think the shape feels better. I'll add that to the sierra's as well.

As for Glow being mostly shellac, I did not know that, it does add a bit more shine but not much, my next step is CA.

The people at work seem to prefer the straighter lines. Guess it's an individual thing.
