    Default CA Glues

    howdy doody

as much as i look around the web i can't seem to find out the difference between the $2 and $30 CA glues

i have had no access to the more expensive CA glues in my area and i have been using the $2 for 7 tubes stuff from the $2 shop, which is only the thin stuff

last week i found someone, kind of local - 80K's away - that has the medium and thick versions of CA, i decided to get the medium to try initially

i always use BLO, a very small drop, only enough to dampen the paper towel where the CA sits - this i find stops the towel from sticking to the pen and from what i have read works as a mild accelerant for the CA

3 coats of medium CA and the finish seemed to stick very well to the wood of the pen although a numbe of ridges, after this i decided to use the cheap stuff to fill out the ridges, great finish

these seemed to work well together but really what is the difference between them

i look forward to your answers or views

    MIK

    Hey Mik,

I use the precision dropper bottle from bunnies, about $5 for a bottle I find I don't have as much dripping all over the place, i used a tube (el Cheapo from $2 Shop) once and ended up with the stuff every where cause it wouldn't stop coming out. I have one of the suppliers from work that does a bigger bottle than the bunnies one that works out about half what I pay at Bunnies, it comes in medium and low viscosity (I hope Thin), next week I'll get some and try it. I'm the same a you Mik I can't seem to find a difference between expensive and el cheapo, it still sticks your fingers to the Rag just the same.

I pretty sure there is a difference and from memory Skew knows about it I'm sure this has been discussed before I will do a search and see if I can find it for you.

As for me I use GPW ca no complaints yet

    Hi Mik
Due to my model hobby background I think I can help.
I am using a product called SLO-ZAP Ca it is a thick ca that dries between 30-60 seconds so it does not have a tendancy to rip the rag from your hand. It is available from hobby shops. Also since it dries slow I dont get ridges forming.

You can buy it online, I get mine from Bairnsdale hobby shop $25 for 56g fairly large bottle. If you want I can pick some up and bring it to you.

    Regards Pete

Use Acrylic finishing pads, wet of course, to get rid if the ridges. Amos

thanks for your input, the ridges i am not worried about because they fill with the thin ca to a smooth finish and i usually give them a light go over with wet micro mesh

i am very interested in the difference between the cheap and expensive CA glues, i am sure there must be a difference, just like the difference between a $20 and $200 pair of shoes you can feel the difference however the glues seem to be the same

same smell, both stick your fingers together in 2 seconds flat, did i mention the smell

    thanks

we use and sell MITER FIX it has a 50G Medium CA and Accelarator for $22, I think you can get it from Bunnings for about the same price but I haven't seen it for a while

Hope this helps - Also use the small plastic bags that the pen comes in and it doesn't stick hardly at all..

MIK, have an extraction system going so the fumes go out and away from you. Amos

no i use the blue workshop paper towels which i fold up so that i have 8 layers between me and the glue, the only time the glue gets on my fingers is when it dribbles off the side.

fumes are not a problem as i use a respirator

i was only joking around with that bit, gotta have a bit of fun in this world hey

i did a pen last night which i will post in another thread and the ripples just disappear once you start putting on the thin CA, sand with the 5 finest micro mesh, polish with brasso, a quick buff on the cloth wheel with Sutton Tools white buffing compound and the finish is so deep and full it is amazing

thanks for the replys still trying to find out if CA is CA or the price makes a difference

My local cheap shop has CA glue in small bottles for $2 each. It is only the thin CA but seems to work well. I have noticed that it doesn't dry quite as quickly as some of the more expensive CA glues that I have used from carba tec but nevertheless it has never failed me yet. Whats the difference? I don't know, both the expensive CA's and the cheaper ones seem to work okay for me. Maybe time will tell the tale.

Yes the small plastic bags are used for applying the Ca and it works great because generally the plastic bag will not stick to the pen blank unless you are very slow in applying the CA and it gets a chance to heat up then it will stick.

    Post CA Glues

    Hi All
I have been wondering the same thing about the CA glues is there a difference between the cheapies and the expensive ones. Maybe long term as someone said.
I read somewhere that Wax Paste rubbed on the fingers of rubber gloves stops the glue sticking and u can also use it on the wood if you are repairing a small crack to stop the glue spreading. Worth a try I have wasted heaps of gloves.
    Happy woodworking
    Cheers

    hi rosie

i am still using the cheap stuff as thin CA as a finish on all my pens and will be for sometime as i have 300 odd tubes of the stuff, it works very nicely,

i would guess that if you really worked it out the cheap stuff is not so cheap due to the small amount in the tube, i get 1 or 2 pens out of a tube though and it doesn't matter if the small amount left in the tube dries out

After much researcxh and study on this subject I finally came up with an answer. The main difference between the $2 and $30 CA glue is $28.
