Celtic Knot Problems?
G'Day Fellas,
I've just made my first pen with a Celtic Cross design and hit a problem which I need some help with !
My drill wandered badly - never been a problem before- it entered centrally and exited way off !
My plan to avoid this is to drill the main blank and the blank the slices are cut from first, it will mean the holes in the slice when glued in aren't at the right angle but the hole through the main blank should guide it straight.
Do you think this will work and how do you deal with this ?

I tape my knot blanks when drilling to give them some support (not that this helps you with your problem). Maybe try drilling the hole in stages working up to the full sized bit? That said, I actually like the idea of drilling the blank before cutting for the veneers. I hand cut mine on a Nobex style mitre saw as I like them with a thinner veneer so not having to cut through the whole blank would be much easier for me... might try that next time
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

i always mark the center drill point on the end of the blank and drill on the lathe
all of my knots are cut on a Hitachi miter saw with a depth stop(best saw i ever purchased), along with a couple of jigs i made
the only time i have run into problems is when i have used aluminum, the heat from drilling seems to break the glue on the joints, but next time i try this i will drill small and increase drill bits slowly
if you want to try the pre drill method i would only drill the first 20-30mm rather than all the way through, that way the second half can't be 1mm out and wreck everything
i hope this helps
all the best

Try using a brad point drill bit. I should not wander off.

Update from my side of the fence. I tried pre-drilling the hole then cutting for the veneers and it made cutting with the hand saw much easier. Alignment seemed pretty good as well. Sorry but three of the blanks were given away and the other hasn't been finished yet so you will need to wait for the recipients to post pics (if they successfully turn the pens )

Another attempt !
Tried another knot tonight. Much better than the first one, altered my jig to improve the ability to cut the right size, glue up was much better this time too. My drill didnt wander this time -- used a higher speed and a slow feed rate. I didnt centre the drill well enough though, so it was a bit off centre. Third time lucky !!!! LOL !!!

Hey Cam,
even a bit off centre gives an eccentric pattern, the punters think its cool, it's only us who know know that we had a mistake, 8-)

I have made a jig to cut them on the bandsaw don't cut right through leave 1mm glue in the filet let dry then repeat drill on the lathe slow speed and feed clear often. I use a 6.9 twist bit and in doesn't wander ,works for me and with a stop on the jig each cut will be the same.

looks pretty good from here Cam
the color combinations also suit each other, well done
with photos i take all my photos at 12megapixel then reduce them to 800X600 as a jpg to upload, i keep the 12meg files in a pickie folder just in case i need to get some printed
i wish i could take better photos though, maybe when the daughter does photography at school next year she will teach me, or better yet take the pickies for me
all the best
