Default May Challenge #2 - York Gum Burl

Just finished this one today. A Professor Pen with a piece of York Gum Burl, mostly sapwood as it turned out.
The blank showed a bit more promise, but most of the darker parts disappeared as I turned it down unfortunately.
    CA finish.

#3 is well under way, but I won't finish it this weekend, so it will have to wait til next weekend.

I have yet to see a burl that I didn't like. Love the timber, and the pen is turned and finished to that excellent Ironwood standard. It's great to see so many different pen kits, a lot of which are not available here, so thanks for letting us see them.

You can usually get these from GPW, they are out of stock at the moment though.
They are a good quality kit, I like them. The brass tube is nice and long to show plenty of timber as well.

    Cheers Gab and BT, appreciated.
Yes the colour of this one is very close to Olivewood, the blank had some darker wood on one side that I was hoping to keep on the pen, but unfortunately it was turned off.

I put the CA finish on #3 this morning, but won’t get back to it until the end of the week. This one is looking good and could be my best pen this year. Stay tuned!!

Very Nice Ironwood, looking forward to the next. I need to buy some more kits before I can get back in to it plus my weeks are currently full up anyway.

Even though you say you turned the dark part off I think it looks just fine the way it is. Looking forward to seeing your "special" one

Ironwood as you are so generous, with posting pics of your lovely pens, sharing woods, your ideas, etc., can I send you some nice York Gum burl that I cut today? I'd dont think you will be disappointed and may even be surprised. No charge, just would like to see what you can make make with it!
Meanwhile, I'm waiting on a visit from Gab as I also have some specials wood to show and offer him. But he's busy with life obligations.
    Cheers Euge

PS: Chris' (Mapleman's) generosity must be catching

I would be up for some York Gum Burl for sure Euge.
Maybe I can swap you something, if I could find something I have that you don't.
Have you got any Cooktown Ironwood Burl ?

I'm glad you would receive some nice wood. No point sending just one species, so if you don't mind I will send a few nicely figured and uncommon woods, ones I hope you don't have, (importantly at no cost, no exchange required). I've not seen Cooktown Ironwood burl, but as I'm not a turner, what could I do with it or other pen blanks? I could ask Gab to make something of them… maybe? Thanks for the offer, I really do appreciate it.

Thanks, although I have plenty of CT ironwood, I don't have it as sample of burl the size for our std samples (finished) is 13 x 80 x 155 mm
Please let me know your post details by PM so I can send you some pen blanks.
