Congrats Tony
We will have to get together and compare machines. John (Gawdelpus) has modified mine to improve stability, you may want to do the same to yours.

Cheers Neil,
Always happy to catch up and share stories and experiences. I have watched a youtube video where the guy provides some advice on strengthening and setting the Beall up for use, so yes I will certainly be doing that. It was funny when I was with the boys at Carrolls making my purchase of the Beall, in conversation your Shi*#y pen was discussed lol !! Your now famous Neil for your Shi*#y pen lol !!
Cheers

Hi Tony,
Enjoy your Pen Wizard, to get a bit more info on modifications etc check out the IAP (International Association Penturners) website under the shop, jigs, fixtures and tools thread.
There is a wealth of info on there.
I've done a lot of mods on mine including mounting a 1/4" laminate trimmer to handle some deeper cutting on S&P Grinders plus others inc. tractor wheels.
Regards
Kryn

Nice little "Toy" there Tony this can give you the ability to make the plainer bits of wood into works of art , you may have to investigate different finishing techniques for the finished blanks as its very hard to polish the grooves and patterns after machining ,most times the material and cutters will guide you hehe. You will never be bored coming up with new things to try One thing I would advise is to set up some good dust extraction as there is not a lot of material removal ,but very fine dust from the dremal cutters. So many things to try ,so little time hehe, cheers ~ John (May have to stay sober for Xmas lol)
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Tony,
A few of my mods to the Beall mine is an earlier one referencev the winding handle only difference.
First thing I bought a heavy breadboard and used angle Aluminium to bolt to the uprights and through the board for stability.
Please note I left the configuration as it was to work from the opposite side of the chips and somewhere I have pics of my own idea of dust extraction I use to a wet and dry Sadie Vac.
I extended the threads either end of the Mandrel to enable extra locknuts.
There are two pics one shows the Beall idea of nesting the end of the mandrel by point contact, did away immediately with that and snug fitted the threaded end into the threaded rod about 3/8 inch deep holding (much more stable IMHO)
Went to a C & C place that works Perspex and made a backing plate fitted Map pins in colours the define intervals the white residue from using CA glue, drilled the tiny holes using a Dremel Drill Stand and Tiny drill, you have C & C make your own.
Have fun.
Kind regards Peter.
PS. a long time ago when I noticed you had C & C I sent you a pm re the drive shaft that Beall uses with the drive handle by now you too will realise it is a bit hows your father in its out of round as you wind I got in touch with Beall who said accurate shafts come real expensive with a travelling nut, not so but it put me off using it until I locate an accurate one, at the time I am sure I fully confused you but now you can make up your own mind, makes it tinker toy for mine.Nil Desperandum

Peter,
Thanks for your detailed post and photos, very much appreciated. I will be taking my time and setting it up properly, so all the advice is great as it gives me a heads up prior to set-up.
Like the little setup for the dust extraction too I have a couple of good wet n Dry dust vacs so something similar will definitely be on the cards.
Kryn,
I have been slowly working my way through the IAP forum, lots of info
Cheers
Tony.

Hi All,
Today was the day, I bought some materials and bits and pieces to set up the pen wizard (Laminated Pine Board, Aluminium Angle, bolts and screws. Thanks for all the tips too guy's they are all much appreciated, slowly working my way through them, but at least the wizard is set up and reliably usable.
I cut up some timber dowel I had laying around to experiment with and used my chuck that I had not used yet, to set up the dowel for drilling on the lathe, with the keyless chuck that I also had not used a few adjustments centering my Tail Stock and we were in business.
So experiment No1. I done some nice even and deep slow spiral cuts up the length of one of the dowel pen blanks, however I never tightened the blank enough on the mandrel and it moved on one of the slow spiral cuts. I also continued to experiment with a little filling in sections of the cuts with some aluminium powder to see how it looked, amazing !!
whilst the blank was only experimental it did look very different and added something very special and different to the blank, I am really looking forward to doing some very interesting Pen Blanks.
If I get a chance later I shall post a couple of photos.
Cheers
Tony.

All good fun Fill that with coffee grounds and even the plainest bit of wood becomes "worthy" hehe . No end of effects you can achieve with a little patience ,and then you go onto "profile " cutting curved surfaces cheers ~ John !
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
