Another Churchill Set in Qld Walnut-
Hello to all, been busy making up some Churchill Sets for a customer, here is one of them, still room for improvement especially on the finish, but I am slowly getting there. Wood is Qld Walnut, finish is shellawax glow and CA and diamond glaze polish on one of them, and show car glaze on the other, the show car glaze doesn't leave white specks like the diamond polish so looks like I will use that in future. All yours now, thanks Amos

G'day Amos,
Love that wood. Beautiful stuff. I also like the kits. I don't care too much for using car finish on the wood myself. That doesn't mean I won't keep trying. I prefer to go with the CA/Shellawax finish. With the Shellawax, it seems to be a bit better at covering those superfine micro scratches that I don't notice until I am done.
Cheers,
Rick

very nice Amos. glad to see you got some orders
bye Toni
PS Rick, I now do use car polish to because what I decided was after you put your 6-8 coats of CA on there is no wood left exposed it is now plastic. So I treat mine exactly as an acrylic, even to the wet MM I found it brings them up beautifully but each of us to our own. That just what I do now
bye Toni

Rick, my reasoning on the finish is the same as Toni's, once the CA is on I treat it as an acrylic or plastic, but I will give the Shellawax a go, although I remeber in another post that some doubts were cast about Shellawax staying on the CA, or, was it the other way round, CA staying on the shellawax. Thanks again all, listen, you may love the look of the wood, BUT, when cut or turned it smells like dung! My children have come to the shed and immediately lifted up their foot to see if they accidently stepped in some dog stuff( we have two jack Russells), my wife came in and said " what"s that stink" I explained about the Qld Walnut, so she says " hope the pens don't smell!?" Well , no, once sanded and sealed , all is well. Until then, out with the masks. Amos

Hi Amos
I agree with you Walnut is impressive and I am at a loss how to describe the smell but it reminds me if someone throws up it everyone has to it can be that strong, with finishes I feel we get hung up on this subject.
Best use what you like and vary the technique to suit yourself I say cause I do,Mequires has a lot of the good stuff in their expensive waxes.
The last thing I use is a wax stick,it has hardly worn after heaps of years,a little goes a long way.
Please get some sleep sometime, just kidding.
Regards Peter

Amos trying to catch up on the threads, great execution in fit up and finish of the Churchill. You are right the Qld Walnut stinks like all and is enough to make them buldge. from me.

I've been working with the CA/BLO Finish. Getting those micro scratches out is a challenge. I have been trying the following
- Put down my Ca+BLO (3-4 Coats)
- Start with a 400 Grit and with lathe off
- use MM and put a drop of BLO on my MM with lathe on
- Go through the grits
- Turn lathe off. Admire your work..
- I have found that sometimes I will have to start half way down on the MM and sand lenght wise up to 12000. (a drop of BLO inbetween MM's)
- All good.. SWEET. Next!
Isnt this great fun? I wish i had this much fun at work!Turned Around in Idaho
