Thread: Congratulations, Ironwood

Thanks Gary. I have been meaning to post the photos here, since the comp ended, but I have had a bad couple of days and other things have had to take priority. My wife was bitten by a snake and had to spend some time in the hospital, things are back to normal ( still chaos, but chaos is normal for me lately it seems)
I have to go out right now, but will post the pics this afternoon.

Congratulations on your placing. I will look forward to some pix when time permits. Please pass my good wishes to your other half. What sort of snake by the way, although my understanding is that nowadays there may only be a single vaccine so perhaps the culprit is not identified?

yeah congrats for the pen, and good to hear your wife is on the mend after something that would have been a significantly scary thing!

It was easily identified, I had a small chainsaw in my hands at the time and it accidentally hit the snake, killing it in the process. So I took it with us in a plastic bag, much to the horror of the Nurses.

I have always called them a Night Tiger, I googled Night Tiger, and they are actually a Brown Tree Snake. They are venomous, but not considered too much of a threat to humans despite their aggressive nature.

She was bitten twice on the big toe, but I don't think the snake got any venom into her, as she was not sick or had any other symptoms. The Ambos and Hospital treated it as any snakebite and took no chances, this meant being hospitalised for 14 hours with regular blood testing, and hooked up to a monitor. It was a pain in the a##, but you can't take chances.

Here are some pics of pen I entered into the comp.
The blank was marked as Horistas Burl. I turned this blank about 6 months ago, and it sat on my bench without a finish.
I turned a couple of other pens so I could pick one to enter into the Pretty Wood comp, and I picked up this blank and put a CA finish on it at the same time. I took photos of all 3 pens, so I could pick one. I decided this one probably had the best chance so went with it.
The other 2 were the Carolina Cherry Rollerball, and the Brown Mallee Burl Liberty, I posted both those pens on the forum already.

Its very hard to capture all the figure going on in the timber with a photo, this is the best I could do. These 2 pics were taken in natural light.

Beautifully pen Ironwood ... and a well deserved prize where the object (in my opinion) is to show the beauty in such woods to greatest affect - and that takes skill.

I don't know anything about this "Horistas" (sounds Spanish or Portugese) & which looks a bit like Thuja Burl.
Can you tell us more about it? country of origin would help

I received a couple of penblanks marked Horistas Burl in a swap I did with a guy in WA, so assume it’s one of the burls from over that way.
I just googled it, and got a reference to some earrings made with Horistas Burl from Western Australia.
I will have a bit more of a look to see if I can find out more.

Please let me know if you find more, a botanical name esp is what I'd like.
