    Default Conkeberry Bamboo RollerBall

The Conkeberry was a gift from the Australia Day Swap, from Josquigley(Joanne), I cut up the small log into 4, rounded them off on the Metal lathe, the fill for worm holes is Ebony dust and CA. Thanks Joanne. I turned this on the metal lathe, a first for me(encouraged by John (Gawdelpus) to try it, and thanks to John and Fred for advice on how to unjamm the lathe after a small lapse of concentration caused a jamm. The finish is CA. hope you you like it. Amos

Again a great pen Amos. What is the kit? It really goes with the timber.
    Well done.

Amos it is an extremely beautiful pen. You have used outstanding timber in Conkeberry and the finish is flawless. The treatment with the Ebony sawdust really enhances the the pens dramatic look. The most obvious reason is to have perfectly straight barrels, but are there any other reasons to machine the pen on a metal lathe than to hand turn it on the wood lathe?

Thanks all, Darren, I tried it as an experiment, found it very interesting, each tool has to be "learnt", slowly getting there, Amos

Another great example of your outstanding craftsmanship Amos!
Excellent Form, Fit and Finish with a nice choice of kit and plating to show off a great piece of timber.
    Well done mate!

That is good that you are experimenting mate. With the cutting bits in the tool post I know you can finely adjust it. Does it give a better finish off the tool and help minimize the sanding process? Do you do the whole process on the metal lathe or then finish on the wood lathe. I know a lot of questions, just interested. I know wood dust and the parts of the metal lathe tend to disagree with each other.

    Another amazing pen Amos.

What wonderful colour and grain in the pen.

If I made it, it would definitely stay in the keeper pile.

    Thanks for sharing

Hi Amos you already know my weakness and great respect for Conkerberry/ like the pens, the infill and in particular the finish. When I can I have some to do thinking unusual design. Learning to walk with extreme pain now having stronger tabs seems to help so far. The Bamboo Kit with the flashes on the clip are different and match in with the sapwood and love the gold kit as well.

At our last meeting of our wood guild a local manufacturing Up market( kitchens and furniture) this firm showed us how he buys natural Bamboo by the shipping container as finished sizes board etc, very impressed with both looks and strength.

If I may chip in with a comment my Hercus Metal Lathe was purchased for a Wood Workshop at a University in the 60,s and was used for wood mainly until I bought it from them 18 years ago, I picked it up by myself with an auto engine hoist and trailer, brought it home using compressed air blew out the wood dust etc and used it from then to now a real lot. I tend to avoid timber on the Hercus because it stains the metal bed and moisture combines with wood dust and lubricated parts to contaminate the timber in use easily. Nowadays with ball races rather than sleeve bearings on metal lathes not so big probs but metal lathes thrive on oil on the ways etc. If my experiences prove my lathe can take it for so many years in a sawdust laden atmosphere a balance of extra care and consideration tells me all things are possible. The answer is in the wind either you have to go the extra mile and use a metal lathe with wood and be prepared for that hostile combination especially if you live near the sea atmosphere.

    Kind regards to all Peter.

Thanks David, Les and Peter; Darren, some people get a beautiful finish off the metal lathe, but that has not been my experience yet!!!!, It must be in the tip that is used, and in that area I have much to learn. In this case I turned down to about 1 mil to go then crossed to the wood lathe for final sanding and finishing, It took nearly a good hour to finish to my liking. I never stop learning something!!!!Amos

Absolutely beautiful. That blank is to die for. The F&F is spot on.
