    Default Conkerberry collection

Among a mixed batch of pen blanks I bought from Euge was a Conkerberry blank. Turning it was like carving soft cheese and the finished pen, to my "unbiased" eyes, was fantastic - the timber, not the workmanship. So I chased up Euge for some more and manged to get a couple of pieces, the results of which are shown here. Guess who's now even a bigger fan of Conkerberry - thanks, Euge. All are finished with EEE and Shellawax Glow (you don't think I'd let anyone use them, do you?) and the pen kits, from left, are Lucida, Sierra, Streamline, Polaris, Sierra and Sierra.

    Cheers, Gary H

Awesome job there Gary! Certainly a beautiful selection of timber but finished very well also!! Just gotta get you into the CA finish - then they can be used and still look as good

I love the way Euge manages to get some amazing contrast of sap/heartwood in his blanks. Gives us guys a chance to display the timber in all its glory.

    Keep it up Gary

You’ve been busy there Gary, I love the job you have done on them. I can’t think of a better use for Conkerberry than making pens, I reckon you’ve figured that out too .

Well done to Euge as well for supplying the timber prn .

Wonderful work and display of your great pens Gary. (I didn't want to be the first to applaud you ).
I know that Gab has more to show us too but may be keeping his "powder dry", maybe for May. As for blanks I like finding contrasting sapwood and heartwood and especially if there are interesting features of some sort (colour grain change etc).
Well done Gary, and thank to you too Gab, for displaying your very fine pens

edit: I love conkerberry too. It wood is hard but very fine in texture. But be careful of its wood dust, avoid inhaling it.

Conkerberry has been a life quest for me. It is a low growing bush with thorns and tends to grow in patches,is home to all manner of Snakes etc ,grows very close to the ground, has a fruit much like a plum. It is coveted by white ants that pipe through the centre. The variations are numerous. It is slow growing with a huge variation in colours. My quest continues.White Ants love it and tend to hollow it out.

using EEE with shellac glow is my preference as well on pens the finish is great and durable [I've checked pens after a couple of years use and they are still as good as.]

    Hi Peter & penturners,

After Easter I will post some information & pics on Conkerberry and a related species (Carrissa ovata) I collected many years ago in the tropical north.
Best done in another thread so it does not distract from these pens, it will compliment knowledge though. I may have posted some pics elsewhere.

Thanks, Brad. Pens it is - I'd hate to be holding my breath waiting for bowl size Conkerberry blanks.
And Yes, Gab, my trying CA is getting closer !
