    Default Corian and Aluminium Sierra

    Hello all,

A first time experiment for me - Corian and Aluminium. For those interested here is the process - First I cut five 20x20mm squares from a sheet of 12mm white corian a quick rub of both sides on a sheet of 220 wet and dry to de-bur and roughen for glue adhesion. Then I cut four 20x20mm aluminium squares from a 1mm sheet, again roughened the surface for gluing. I used 5 minute epoxy to glue the stack together and left overnight clamped in a vice. The next day I drilled the glued up blank for the tube. First I drilled a 1/8in pilot hole and then the larger drill and glued the tube in using epoxy and left it for 4 hours. I turned it using a 3/8 spindle gouge and a round nose scraper, sanded and polished with auto metal polish. I'm happy with the result. Excuse the pics - new computer with limited editing software (not to mention the ordinary photographer).

Very unique and nicely done Fred!
The kit plating really complements the barrel material.

    Default Hi Fred

Long time no see. The last Wood Guild meeting was a breath of fresh air for me.

Using Aluminium must have been tricky with white Corian I find the white Corian carries over any trace of a metal when polishing and always use SSteel bushes especially avoiding brass. Interesting observation I too found that white is 12mm that extra thickness on other colours enables a fatter pen, drilling is exciting with the 10 mm stuff.

Like your pen cause the right hand side of your brain is very active and shows initiative a beaut finishing design in all you do, once again great to see your work.

At the risk of embarrassing you I always remember you cleaning up the Turning prizes at the club even against the Master Richard Raffan your finishing on bowls etc is in a class of its own, still also remember the impact your basket weave technique carried everything before it.

    Take care. Kind regards Peter.

Thanks gentlemen, glad you like my pen, the satin chrome sierra and the white corian - aluminium make a nice combination. It's a reasonably simple and easy process to glue up a blank like this and turning the corian and aluminium presents no real problem with the use of sharp tools.

Peter - Yes, you are embarrassing me. Hope you're fit and well, see you at the guild soon.

Johno - Pretty easy to make a blank, so when you make one, post a pic - I'd be interested to see it.
