    Default Customised Tycoon

    G'Day Folks,

    Heres another from the workshop.

A Tycoon Kit from Carbatec (bought ages ago when they where on special) and one of Bruces blanks called Collosal. I've not posted many pics cos I stuffed up the pen at the last moment by dropping the cap and half the finial broke off and disappeared on the garage floor !!

I dismantled the caps centreband arrangement and replaced it with a tiny bit of the blank as well as doing a custom finial.
If I hadnt stuffed up at the end it would be a stunner - isnt that always the way !!

panaches etc cropp and comp 020.JPG

    Regards,
    Cam

    Ben,

This is the way I do my custom finials - I mount a spare piece of wood into my chuck jaws and true up the face of it with a gouge. Then I CA glue a spare piece of resin to (roughly) the centre and turn it to round. Then I turn a small tenon (4-6mm long) that will be a good (NOT Tight ) fit through the clip ring and the cap tube. Then I part it off from the piece thats glued to the wood in the chuck jaws. I then insert the tenon into my collet chuck and turn the finial to whatever shape I want, sand and polish as normal. Then put the clip ring on and glue it all into the cap tube. It doesnt take long at all its just a case of mastering the process. If you dont have a collet chuck then very carefully cut a recess into the wood in the chuck and jam the finial in to finish turning it.

I hope this helps - PM me if you need more help - we dont live very far apart ! Also check out the Library section on the IAP site ( www.penturners.org )

    Regards,
    Cam
