Turning Deer Antler
Good Evening all
I was given some antler some time ago (Thanks Corbs), and in the great garage clean up of 2015, I found it again.
I thought it would be perfect for a bolt action.
The centre section of the antler appears to be quite porous. If it was a larger diameter, I could avoid the centre, and use the solid sides, but alas, I cannot.
So, Can I just drill down the centre and fill any voids etc with CA?
Thanks
Willy

Yes you can. Try and leave some of the outer skin and avoid showing the fibres stuff if you can. If it is too big, you are better off saving it for something else, or cutting off the outer layers and gluing them to a laminate of some sort before drilling.
ps the stuff stinksNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

CAUTION!!
It dose stink and if you can smell it you are breathing antler dust.
Antler dust is deadly and causes pulmonary fibrosis if breathed.
Use a good quality respirator and dust collection.
Remove all traces of antler dust from you hair, clothing and surrounding equipment.

Oh Gosh!!
You may have just put me off turning my first bit of Antler.
I may have to get my kids to turn it for me if it is that dangerous

I have to agree with Les.
Antler is great. I actually like showing a bit of the central pores. As mentioned earlier, some thin CA to seal the pores and keep te grimm out.
Antler does need caution, and a mask of some kind is a must, but its worth it in the end.

Does that go for just antler or horn as well? I made buffalo horn knife handles and that really stinks too.
