Dipping method variation
Hi folks,
I tried a variation on Les Elms excellent dipping method out of necessity this week, and it seemed to work well, so I am posting it in case it's useful to someone!
Basically, I wanted to dip some Jr Gents in rustin's plastic (I have started to hate dealing with CA and have never been able to use it reliably). I had some dowel that was the right size for the body tubes laying around the shop, but nothing for the caps.
I did have some 6mm dowel and some delrin cone bushes... So, put the bushes on the dowel with the the tubes mounted, and then mounted some little brass hooks into the end of the dowels so I could hang them up to dry. You could also just drill holes in a board and slot them in there, I just found the hooks before I could find a suitable drill bit.
Then proceed to dip. The bushes prevent you from dabbing the ends, but I didn't get build up on the end of the tubes, as it just flowed over to the bushes (and dripped off, so be careful where you hang them!).
I've only tried this on 3 tubes, but I think I had better success with these than the ones mounted directly to dowel. The only issue you are going to get some plastic inside the tube to remove afterwards...
Cheers,
Danny

I was talking to someone on their way to TurnFest yesterday and they told me the Rustins Plastic does go yellow in sunlight so you may want to check it yourself. I've only used it for cutlery (i.e. inside out of sunlight). They said they went to clear car lacquer

Rustin's themselves reckon it won't yellow, but having said that I suspect it mainly gets used on things used indoors, and there is also a difference in sunlight between Queensland and London, so I am willing to believe it might! Going to try a bunch of pens dipped in WOP next anyway.
Learning to spray lacquer (and buying the gear) is on my to-do list anyway, for larger turned items... Maybe later this year!

Could you use the spray can variety or it would need to be the one the pros use with a spray gun? Like these

Interesting! Looks like the guitar finishing folks have some good aerosol options:

I'll give some a try. Hope a can goes a long way, they're not all that cheap...
